Alright guys, I will step in again and help you guys out......

1. Your Detectors ARE working just fine. Remember a few posts back I said 95% of people do NOT know how to use them. This is exactly why I said that. Just because you see a patrol car, doesn't mean he has a radar, has the radar transmitting, or even turned on.

2. Last second RD goes off, and your looking at him too------ Simple, I flicked the switch to transmit and you happened to be close. NOTHING you can do, I have you likely no matter what. However, what you hope for is scatter. Picking up scatter a distance away will alert you to the presence, Hence what I said earlier in a post---- if you see Ka band (likely one or two bars out of 6-7), SLOW DOWN, it IS a patrol car somewhere. Whether in front, behind, or half a mile to the side, there still IS a radar operating somewhere. Keep it cool for a bit, better than getting actually hit. A lot of times you will see people fly by, then they get hit and pulled. More often than not, on the highway this is how you will be alerted.

3. Radar works by a switch, if forward transmitter is being used, then the radar is constantly reading numbers. Advanced will have two numbers, the fastest and second fastest. All you do is lock that number in, and make sure you have the correct vehicle for that number. (remember, I DO NOT have to lock a number or even use the radar, I can estimate the speed by my eyeballs and training, then write a citation off of that) ( also, people think and say, I want to see the radar. This is NOT happening, I will not allow you to get out of your car period. That is not a legal requirement) Locking is as simple as pushing a button, it will still read numbers after. I typically lock one in and then if the speed increases then re lock the new number.

4. Radar Time-- almost instantaneous, once reading its picking up the fastest moving object (larger first) within the group or ahead of you on the opposite side of the road. NOW, slamming the brakes will likely get you pulled also. I estimated your speed before you hit the brakes or as you do, then hit with radar to see where you are at when you let off. Or watch it count the speed down too. I can write for the estimated speed.

5. Nanook and I have given plenty of information to knowledgeably purchase and use a RD. Please do your research on types and your budget. NOTHING is failsafe and there are several well documented review sites on the web.

6. Escort--- the 9500 series can be updated through firmware at home, and unless something goes terribly wrong, you won't need to send it in.
The 8500x50 cannot be upgraded at home. Cost is 129.99 and it happens about once every 3 years. Will say needs calibration. They will update it to the current firmware and add other things. But will cost that. Might as week get the 9500 knowing this.

Nanook and SheriffDep gave some pretty good information. There are some points that I want to add.

If you are in a banned state such as most of Canada, Virginia and Washington DC, you need a radar detector that is invisible to Radar Detector Detectors (RDD). The only radar detectors that can not be detected by a RDD are the Escort 9500ci, Escort Redline, Beltronics STiR+ and Beltronics STi Magnum. The escort 9500xi, escort Max and Valentine one and all other radar detectors are detectible by RDDs.

You need to decide if you want maximum sensitivity from a radar detector or are willing to sacrifice performance for less false alerts. If you want maximum performance the best radar detectors are the Escort Redline, Beltronics STiR+ and slightly less sensitive but still a great radar detector the Valentine one. To make any of these radar detectors perform to their maximum ability, you will need to take a few minutes and program them through their menus or in the case of the v1, get v1connection,,and program the V1 through it. Radardetector #4 in my book is the Escort Max. Every other Escort and Beltronics radar detector including he Escort 9500ci is second rate. All other manufacturers are a big step below Escort.

As far as laser jammers are concerned, even if you have a front plate, SheriffDep will not be able to get a reading on any car with a properly installed AntiLaser Priority. The AL Priority is the new best performing laser jammer. It outperforms the Laser Interceptor, Blinder HP-905 and Escorts new Laser Shifter Pro (a rebadged Laser Interceptor). http://www.raletc.org/2013/09/raletc...fest-2013.html

Great info, he meant the Max is #1 in his opinion. Some of the Bel's are rebadged Escort 9500's. Any of the high line Escort's you won't be disappointed, but certain areas are a concern of course.

Max is #4 behind the Redline, STiR+, and V1

sorry, makes sense---- follows what Nanook says. I personally love RD's and did research for a long time on them. DO NOT know much about the laser shifters, understand what they do (K40 has one mounted ON the front L Bracket) but not experienced it.

More food for thought...tidbits to fuel your database

-Bel is owned by Escort (BEL was originally a CDN company..Escort (Passport) was Cincinnati Microwave)

-Bel STiR Plus is nearly identical but rated slightly higher than 9500ci as it has additional programming for Ka sector filtering. This gives the experienced user the ability to filter out specific KA frequencies (only) thought redundant so the detector apparently reacts quicker as it has less spectrum to analyze/scrutinize

- the new "Antilaser Priority" laser jammer system should be of high consideration if not number one with a robust list of options and now the ability to interact with the STiR, and iPhone app..(picture a wireless connectivity with the cpu housed under the hood...no firewall penetration...but you must run with your iphone app active for alerts)

-many LEO depts (prevalent here locally) have the new DragonEye Laser system/type guns mated with a long focal length lens and take photo laser images from the rear...no chase vehicle needed and tickets mailed out for a cash violation only)..we do not run front plates here ergo the rear shot. As I mentioned previously this new laser is proving troublesome to current jammer algorithms and of course rear head/s are needed (the toughest to install)

Finally a source..I cannot vouch for the company or it's pricing..use at your own risk !..note combo package with jammer and STiR.
If I was to re-arm my ride I would likely go this route (although I have a cheaper source for the STiR so I would buy as separates)
And for you southern gents buying with USD...bonus !!

The best radar detectors are the Escort Passport Max, Escort Passport Redline, and V1. I sold my Escort 9500ix a couple months ago for the new Escort Max and I'm glad I did. The performance is better than the 9500ix, it has a colored LED screen, and still has the GPS feature. (The GPS feature tells you when you are approaching a red light cameras and speed cameras)

And here's an escort radar detector comparison chart..
