No this is not a run of the mill DIY. You need very specific tools to swap the ring gear and bearings over.

I didn't have an OEM LSD so I'm not sure. Wavetrac is mechanical where OEM is clutch. They behave differently and have different locking percentages (Wavetrack is also adjustable).

I'm pretty handy; brake jobs, clutches, valve adjustment, etc
Over 30 years shadetree experience on BMW's, Porsches, etc

This was more than I wanted to tackle
Tools
Some say a press
A lift
But most importantly the knowledge base to shim /set it up properly

It was the best money I've spent on a 'mod'
Imho in this case a 'must'

Specializes in trannys , diffs & xfer cases
A real organized and well equipped operation
Has a rep for gtr and evo work

And the owner is an AMG guy
06 e55 modded I think
12 e63 with ceramics

And a 8.5 sec 175 mph gtr
He was disappointed it didnt do 185

He showed me the diff, a real nice piece of engineering
In fact he bought one for his e55

I have a high degree of confidence that it will done right
Shep is one of the top notch guys in the Evo and DSM community for years. Like Dave Buschur (Buschur Racing)He is well proven you won't go wrong!! He has a ton of videos on you tube and is known everywhere!!

You need a bearing puller and press.
A bearing cone heater (may be able to get away with an oven)
A lift would be handy but un-necessary. Pulled my pumpkin on the garage floor.
There are no shims.

How is the ring and pinion spacing set without shims? Last time I did one (a Porsche so it was different) checking the mesh pattern and redoing the spacing was critical for silent running. How does MB do this?

Maybe you could shim the ring gear if it's out of spec.

My factory backlash was within spec and still within spec with the Wavetrack.

John had shims just in case but didn't need them

The only hiccup was some components use an external 12 point fastener and he didn't have the tools

As soon as he realized it the Cornwall tool guy pulled in
Problem solved

So he would have shimmed the ring gear if the backlash was out of spec?

I have no idea what they were for
I thought they were used to center the carrier?
Establish the relationship to the pinion?
But really don't know

Nope, it's fixed in the housing. I didn't see any way to shim the pinion depth like you can with some other differentials.

Just cross your fingers

Not pinion depth
Carrier side to side
Wavetrac sent him the shims
They have a MB pn
The also show on the mb parts program

I have more confidence in sheptrans than I do you
Infinitely
They were on the order of 100 ths of an inch

Similar set-up as in the link

Shouldn't make a difference
Both are mechanical

Imo if I had an oem lsd I'm not sure I'd spend the money

Does the LSD help with straight line acceleration (ie a drag strip) or just on curvy roads/track?

with wavetrac when you "WOT" it...does it hookup or does it cut power for 2-3 seconds? If it hooks up without losing traction..it's better then the OEM OEM LSD cuts power no matter what if you WOT it even with brand new tires ..unless you turn ESP OFF but you run the risk of doing donuts then
