Mercedes Introduces The New 4.0 V8 BiTurbo
Why do we think it will sound terrible, aside from preconceived notions that displacement = audio heaven?
If it's not the size, it's something else. If it's not the torque, it's something else. If it's not the performance, it's something else. This happens each and every time a MFR releases a new product. The folks with the current or previous gens pull their hair out about how it will never be as good as what they have, and the MFR is ruining the brand, etc. Then it comes out, they drive it, are in a position to buy one, do it, and love it.
Rinse and repeat with every single new model. C55 sucks, where is the boost, wahhhhh!!! C63 sucks, they have taken all the balance out of the car, made it a drag racer, wahhhhhh! Facelift sucks, who needs a new transmission, and the look is so much softer and not as aggressive! More electronic BS to go wrong....Wahhhhh!
Rinse and repeat. Just realize, it's going to better than the current version, like it always is, and save the e-tears
This is the first car I ever bought partially due to the sound.
Didn't even have it as a variable before the test drive.
Numbers don't make you enjoy a car. The experience of the car does.
This is a visceral car. Hopefully they keep that feeling.
In this case, I think the old saying of "there's no replacement for displacement" still applies. I think the C63 V8 is a great sounding car on the road, at WOT, on idle waiting on a traffic light, people hear it and look. I will think the V6 will give a sound that is similar and close to the outgoing V8 motor. Those AMG dudes are car guys too.

I'm definitely excited to see the potential of this engine and what it's capable of doing.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
BMW has pretty much given up on this for its turbo engines: it just uses the car's stereo to pipe in a synthetic motor noise.
Given AMG's heritage I'm guessing they'll work hard to get some rasp in to the exhaust but I wouldn't take it as a given that it'll be a great sound.
