Chrome door trim. what to do?
so i want to black it out…how are most of you guys doing it? painting or wrapping? i took it to a paint ship (they painted my grill black for me) and they said its risky business painting chrome trim? because it might crack when they're removing it? they told me the best best is to buy a set of oem chrome trim so they can paint the new set, then install it without worries of the original set cracking. so what do you guys think? and how much would a set of the trim cost?

I wrapped my trim with Gloss black vinyl.
Overall not a bad job, it came out pretty good. But there are a few imperfections that bother me.
Its not difficult, but its not as straight forward as you would think.
I think I will be taking the trim off at the end of this season and have all of them powder coated gloss black. Makes for a more OEM look.
Either way, don't be afraid to tackle it. With some help and patience you can get it done.

Wish I wasn't so lazy I would give this a try. Plus the fact that I suck at DIY's doesn't help
Kriston where did you buy the gloss black vinyl wrap from?

Just paid a local shop to wrap my trim as well as roof rails and boot strip. Didn't want matte or gloss so went with a satin vinyl and it looks amazing.
Will post pics once the weather settles down here.

Plastidip (for me) is not a permanent solution.
Vinyl is relatively inexpensive and depending on what you're wrapping it is relatively easy to apply.
Just take the plunge

you can buy the 3m 1080 wraps off of amazon too. all shapes and sizes. i ended up using the satin, not gloss, to do my window trims as I felt it better matched the rubber adjacent to it. but gloss would probably be fine too as they both look pretty similar.

And if you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay? (its good to know Aussie prices, as opposed to the lucky buggers in the states who get it all cheap!)

Kriston,
I don't think you can get them powder coated. I asked, and as you may know, powder coating involves placing them in an oven, which they are plastic. You can only powdercoat metal objects.
I wrapped mine for everyone else here wondering. I went with a gloss black to match the gloss the trim on the door pillars.

I ordered and used most of a 5'x5' sheet. The top piece of trim however is about 8' long IIRC, so you need to make a small overlap. Don't worry, it's invisible. I would order a 5x5. It was pretty inexpensive too, IIRC.

I also read some folks suggesting a color-match on the trunk chrome piece since the different shades of black look off. My car is white with plenty of gloss black accents already so I may still go with gloss black. Otherwise will order a small roll of gloss white wrap.

Would there be enough left over to do the chrome piece on the trunk?

Oh yea, plenty left over, probably close to 2x5'. I did my trunk piece too, but used gloss black since my car is gloss black. you can order a 1'x5' piece of gloss white for that. I may end up redoing part of my window trim anyway, so I'm glad I have some leftovers as I didn't do a perfect job on some areas. There is a learning curve, but it looks good to anyone but me who can see the microscopic hint of chrome showing at one edge which bugs me. But it looks great otherwise.

I would do plasti dip if it didn't leave a matte finish. I have my roof vinyl wrapped so I think I will do the same with the window trims and maybe get my interior pieces wrapped the same time with cf. Just need to get around to getting it done when I have some time.
My biggest issue would be taking off the trims, if I could wrap them with the trim on the vehicle I might have given it a shot.
