You can't re-paint it because it was never painted in the first place. It is solid black plastic. You want to paint it. As you mentioned you might need a primer. I think your going to get better results taking it off to paint it rather than taping/spraying around everything. Since it isn't going to be stock I would go with a gloss black, but I have other gloss black trim
. If your diffuser is shot the only thing you stand to loose it the time/labor and the cost of paint. That said there is no way I'd do this to my car. I'd take it as a sign to buy a CF diffuser. If money was tight I'd get the stock one off of the many folks who've bought a CF diffuser and have the stock one laying around. I bet there is one in Houston right now sitting in someones garage.
Good luck whatever you do. Be sure to post some pics.
My Procedure:
1) Cleaned with Simple Green
2) Washed with soap and water and Scotch Brite pad
3) Wet sanded with 600
4) Sprayed SEM 39863 Plastic Adhesion Promoter
5) Several coats of SEM 39143 Trim Black
6) Let it cure for 48hrs and re-installed
Hopefully the pics get attached.
I mean it looks nice, but that's not what you were going for right, or was it...?
Regardless it looks nice. Good job.

Looks great. More of a black than stock right?
roccoam77 - it could be a tad "black-er" but after looking at a number of cars and an MB body shop saying that they use paint code 040 for re-spraying I think it is pretty darn close.
Ingenieur - thanks. I just got your screen name - me too just a dumb one.

Looks good though
