Do you insure your mods?
Hey folks - now that I've been bitten by the mod bug, I'm wondering if I shouldn't insure these mods. Let's say I've got wheels at 6K, etc., I'm thinking these should be added to my base policy on my vehicle? Anyone got any insight? I'd really hate to get wrecked and have my insurer just offer base vehicle price without factoring in the money I've spent on mods.

I had a claim a few years back, I had a bunch of CF items get damaged in the accident. If they are adhered to the vehicle in any way (bolted on, double sided tape), they get covered by the claim.
I was able to track down all of my receipts and was reimbursed fully for all items.

That's frigging awesome. Insurance win. I thought that NEVER happened. I figured for sure I'd need to up my coverage or something like that.

At the time of my accident I had Allstate.
Funny thing is, they covered my aftermarket parts, but then wanted to put used oem body parts on my car... lol
Ahhhh hell no! I called my rep and reamed them a new one and got all new parts 100%.
Needless to say, I no longer have Allstate, my wife and I ended up going with her ins company - Erie.

My insurance will not cover mods. But if you total the car, you are allowed to remove the mods and put the stock parts back. If a modded part gets hurt in a wreck, I think the insurance will pay for a stock part, but I'm betting they would work with you and allow you to pitch in the delta for the modded part.

Looking up CPE insurance, it appears like different carriers have different policies. I did a brief search and progressive covered 1K automatically for motorcycles, but nothing beyond that. I'm assuming most carriers will do the same. It makes sense if you think about it since replacement value increases that they'd want to bump up our rates. I'll have to call my insurer. I can't remember who it is but maybe it's State Farm. Regardless, I think I'll do it as the bump should be minor relative to what I'd lose if someone bashed into me (or vice versa).

The rules will vary by state and carrier....some states will cover mods without endorsements and documentation, others will require both to cover mods. I would call your agent... I'm an agent myself and have some experience with this in my state (NC).
