Would 2 intake filters take place of charcoal? P0171 CEL.

Would 2 intake filters take place of charcoal? P0171 CEL.
So my car is throwing a P0171 code every 10-50 miles and seems to have a slight stumble at idle (I'll get to stoplight, it'll stumble/vibrate for a few seconds then go away -- RPM holds constant the whole time).
Car does have ROW air boxes with charcoals removed and AFE dry filters. My question is if the intake is what's causing the lean code, would layering on a stock filter do the trick? I don't have the old charcoals so would it make sense that the new dry filter would act like charcoal, and then a paper filter on top would make it like stock?
What are your thoughts?

Agreed. The standard air filters are about twice as thick as the charcoals so I doubt they would fit. You'd also be starving the engine of air. I'm sure you have done this, but have you tried uninstalling the airboxes and re-installing everything to ensure you have a tight seal?

Could be the intake manifold gasket.
How long have you had the ROW's/aFe's installed? Cel right after install?
You don't have your charcoals, but do you have the old air boxes and filters? If so, see if reinstalling them gets rid of the cel. Swap your stock filters for aFe's (in stock air boxes), drive cel free for a week or so, throw the ROW's back in.

Fair enough, when I opened them, there seemed to be enough room to layer something on top since stock pics always seems like the charcoal and where the AFE filter sits now is about the same size, but I could be wrong.
Yes, took them out, reseated them, and made sure everything was buttoned up tight.
Car drove for about 100 miles with them no problems, and it’s possible I’m getting the code from bad gas (coincidentally, CEL came on after filling up). I’m going to run through the rest of the tank and refuel with some fuel injector cleaner and my usual station and see if that does it.
Was just starting to plan my plan B if gas wasn’t the issue. Don't have the stock filters or box, but hoping it's the gas.

You probably have a leak somewhere.
I would try different scenarios:
- reinstall OEM boxes + charcoal + OEM filters, clear code and drive for a while,
- No CEL? Then swap filters with AFE, drive,
- No CEL? Then swap boxes with OEM filters and drive,
- No CEL? Then put back the AFE + ROW
If you have CEL (same code) in all cases you have my friend a vacuum leak (intake manifold gasket, pcv valve)
As well if you don;t get any codes for fuel pressure regulator or gas cap the refuelling you did is just a coincidence.

When I first put in my ROW boxes, I noticed the (right box facing the engine from the front bumper) corner nearest to the MAF, I (very slightly) pinched the airfilter. It was the stock filter so I could see a bit of orange gasket visible... I took it apart and reseated it. Also before I loosened the clamps I put an alignment mark as I wasn't sure if there is a torque value for the clamps. Anyway, I got not CELs. I'll have to do this all over again after I receive my dry filters from Weistec.
