I have not tried a COMMAND reset yet, read that on a different sub forum here but even that seems spotty.
The Bluetooth works just fine, no issues there. I am currently on ios 8.1. Will try the COMMAND reset later today see if that works. mine is a 2011 model so if anyone has any input, please share.

Mine is a 2014 model.
Regarding the hotspot question. I never foind a way to use my phone's hotspot to connect to the command system for internet service. The in car system is a 3G (slower) than the phone's 4G service.
I plug the cable that came with the phone into my '12 corvette USB port and I have full functionality to control the music via the steering wheel buttons.
I was about to take the 30 pin to lightning adapter cable back to the apple store to get my refund but I updated my phone on Friday to IOS 8.1.1 and now I have full control of the interface now via the center console wheel and also via the steering wheel and dash buttons. I was out of town when I updated so I tried it again today and all works.
Mine's a 2011 and all I did was buy the adapter cable from the apple store, $39. I did not get a third party cable, figured for something like this use the manufacturer's products. Hope this solves the issues of everyone else with 2012 and earlier.
The only issue is that when changing playlists and selecting a new song from a different playlist, it takes about 3~5 seconds to register that and to begin playing it. Other than that, the forward or rewind options on the same playlists work pretty fast. Way better than nothing working well.
