Oil temp not showing up, fan is running crazy

just noticed/happened today..
when i parked the car, fan was still running for a good minute or so.. i didn't bother as maybe its just still cooling down

when i came back and started to drive about after an hour.. i switched to the AMG menu and the oil temp only shows '---'

water temp is at 197, fan is still running but a bit noisier.. drove about 10 mins (very slowly at 35mph).. got home, parked the car.. same thing.. fan just kept on running for about a minute..

anything to warch out for??? I'll let the car cool down for the day and i'll check the oil level later.. no warnings or anything in the dash/console

Sounds like a communication malfunction (maybe temporary) or your oil temperature sensor has failed.

If your oil level is good then you may be safe as your water temps are in spec. Get the ECU read for codes. A trip to the dealer or Indie may be in order.

Sounds like a problem with the oil temp sensor and since the car can't get a reading it is keeping the fan on to protect itself- built in safe guard.

car sitting in the garage all day.. checked the oil (dip stick), oil level is ok (was worried i ran out of oil). found out that the fan running is the one in the front right vent. just turning the key (to ready, engine not on yet), the fan starts running and loud.

took the car to the dealer this morning..
what was wierd is that half way through driving, the oil temp suddenly showed up (15-20 miles at about 25mins driving) and it picked up from (i think) 83F all the way to 210F.. outside temp (from phone app) was at 62F this AM but cluster outside temp displays 81F (not sure of this has anything to do with the suddden display of oil temp).. SA took all notes.. i do hope they (techs) look into this issue and not just write 'cannot replicate'

If they don't find any codes in the ECU then you may not get any definitive answers. The good thing may be that the oil temperature reading has returned.

As to the ambient air temperature sensor reading high there may be a reason. The temperature probe is in the small lower grill on the drivers side. Sometimes washing the car or vibration can cause the probe to dislodge and fall behind the bumper cover. It is generally hotter behind the bumper cover making the probe read at a higher temperature. If this is not the case then perhaps the probe/sensor is faulty.

2010 E63
I just traded my '10 E63 for a '15 E63S on Monday, and this happened to me last night (day 2). Got a display message that oil temp could not be read, then turned off and jumped out and the fan ran for a few minutes.

Today, there was no temp, just the --- as you had. Guess I'm headed back to the dealer as well, or need to go for a longer drive!
