Oil change intervals and Mobil 1 label

Hey guys, so I spent some time in my owner's manual/packet this weekend and saw where the recommended oil change is 10,000 miles. Do you guys actually go that long?

Also, the OEM Mobil 1 label that is above the RH headlight on my car needs to be replaced. Where is the best place to source one? I am not even sure what it is suppose to look like as the one on my car is badly damaged

10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

It certainly won't hurt to change it early.

As far as the Mobil 1 label is concerned, there is someone on this board that just recently ordered and acquired the label. You might want to conduct a search here to find the post/thread.

Basically, you just need to find the part number and then order it from the dealer or an online parts vendor.

While I understand, most vehicles may be okay with an oil change every 10K Miles. Im not comfortable with letting the oil sit that long in my C63. I change mine every 7-8000 KM.

As zibby said its not a bad thing to change early.

I just got the C63, so haven't looked into what weight of Mobil 1 is recommended for it. I know my old C55 recommended 0-40.

The thing about 0-40 is that it sheers easily. My 911 would sheer right through the oil after only 3-4k miles and then the oil started losing viscosity. Some of it is specific to the flat-6 in the 911, but that convinced me never to go more than 4-5k miles on a 0-40.

I change it during the tire changes for the rear. 8k to 10k miles
No need to change more often unless you have too much money to spend or you are paranoid.

10k is conservative with the volume, filtration system and cooling
Mobil 1 is high quality 229.5 spec only 0w40 or 5w40 for the US

How does one know the oil has 'sheared'?

You can buy the sticker at any dealer. They are pretty cheap.

You know the oil has sheared because the car starts consuming it. Yes, a $100k+ car would drink oil (don't get me started on the 911's quirks). You would also get a nice audible rattle on cold start after the car has sat for a while because the oil is too thin and has drained out of the cam tensioners and lifters.

Most 911 guys switch to a racing oil called "Joe Gibbs DT40" that's high in zinc. I did as well, and a true believer. DT40 is made of unicorn semen, and costs like $15-18 bucks a quart, but was well worth it.

I noticed after 8k miles on Mobil that the car would start burning oil more quickly. Now i run Motul 8100 and change every 5k.

I have read that changing the oil too frequently actually prevents the oil filter from properly doing its job. The oil filter needs to "break in"; and if it's changed too often, you're preventing it from filtering optimally.

I am a former automotive manufacturing engineer. I would follow Merc's instructions. They would not recommend policy that can damage the engine. Now, if you race or otherwise abuse the engine, that's a different story.
But if you don't, you're wasting time and money to do it more often.

Never heard of 'oil filter break-in' Even if that were true, an oil filter that doesn't break-in by 4-5k miles is a whole another manufacturing problem.

Manufacturers aren't incentivized to make sure your engines last 300k miles. Especially when they all offer "complimentary service packages" these days.

New oil and filter is better than old oil and filter. Period.

I do mine every 6000km.

Using either Motul 300V or 8100

Oil is cheap compared to other things.... (Engine) lol

I'm glad we have so many experts in this forum who know better than any mercedes engineer.

I guess i will do an oil change when I get gas just to be on the safe side.

Btw there are oils and ad on filters out there they last a lifetime.
German mercedes yellow caps use them.
A family friend of mine use them on 8 cars and hasn't changed oil since 2008.

http://www.autobild.de/artikel/filte...est-43743.html

I'm not saying that is ok for a c63. It just shows me that the 3000k and 5000k oil changes are just overkill.

OK, I am never buying a used car from sventastic. I will look for used cars from owners who have changed their oil every once in a while.

That "mercedes engineer" is trumped by someone trying to make money. Would Mercedes recommend the best oil if it cost twice as much? And these are the same engineers that gave us weak headbolts.

What are you and your friend smoking? 6 years without an oil change? If you truly believe that load of BS, please put that as a selling point whenever you try to sell your car. "6 year old car that NEVER HAD ITS OIL CHANGED!". That ranks up there with "93 octane fuel is just hype, your car only needs 87".

I assume you don't work in the automotive industry. It's not the mercedes. engineering who makes the bolts they spec them and the manufacturer of the bolts have to comply to the specs. And that didn't happen.

All I'm trying to point out is that a 3 to 5k oil change is an overkill.

You wouldn't buy a car from me anyway since it will have at least 150k on it before I think about selling.

He smokes the same stuff any other taxi cap fleet owner in Germany smokes.
The ad on filter and the oil in the article is real and common practice.
Oil and the disposal of oil is very expensive in Europe and not changing oil is money in their pocket. And studies have proven that the quality of the oil isn't effected.

And yet again I'm not trying to say that oil changes on our c63 aren't needed. It's that a 3to 5k oil change is an overkill.

Btw 93octane is the min what should be put in that gas tank.
Anything below that is garbage.

Hey while we are on this topic, can someone please tell me that scientific research and German cab drivers all prove that I never need to change my tires? Changing tires is overkill, yeah? I'd love to hear that too

No I don't and I understand what you're saying. We have issues like that with the F-18. Things will be all good with a batch of jets and then a new batch rolls along and suddenly we have issues with the brakes or something else. After significant research we find that someone down the line changed suppliers or a very minute process or something. What I'm saying is take everything with a grain of salt, do what makes you feel comfortable with the level or care given to your car, and make educated decisions. Don't be sheeple. Hell, Mercedes even changes the recommended service intervals for our cars years after they are made!

Additionally, I agree that 3-5k is peobably too much. I notice oil burning significantly quicker after 8k based on how I drive. For me 5k is easier to remember, provides me some buffer from 8k, and marries up with the instrument cluster reminders (reset every other time). We are people of overkill...we drive a small car that has a 6.2L V8 and gets somewhere between 10 and 20 mpg depending on how we drive. If you're not about overkill, you're not about the C63 or any AMG product.

What's next you put that oil in relation with.
Now we are on the tire topic? How about the box you are living in?
Read up on the ad on filter and the oil and you might learn something.

And again just to make sure you get my point.
It's not that I'm not changing the oil at all it's that 10k changes are enough.
And the 3 - 5k changes aren't needed.

The mechanism by which oil works is 'shearing'
It must shear to work
If you are saying it shears at a molecular level I can't believe that can be discerned without testing

Oil doesn't really 'wear out' it does get contaminated and some ingredients like detergants get consumed/broken down
Mobil 1 is one of, if not the best oils made
I would never use an oil not on the list

Oil sevice should be measured in hours factored by load
This is difficult to do
BMW used 666 x avg obc mpg to get the reset interval
20 mpg would be 13320 miles
Sort of based on time and use
Driven hard say you get 15 mpg
Reset is 9990 miles
So in a way time goes down and load goes up
Since you assume mpg goes down as speed goes up
Avg obc of 40 mph at a 10k mile interval is 250 hours
At very low loading 30% or less 80% of the time
Maybe over 80% load for 5 to 10% of the time
That is nothing
Trucks run 1000's of hours

btw the price of a car has zilch to do with oil consumption
Rings
Everything warmed up
Proper weight
Cooled properly Mobil 1 is good for over 300deg F sustained
Remember the gauge reads sump temp BEFORE the cooler
