Brake pads replacement opinions...

This is actually for the Cayenne. My front pads are toast. Rears have plenty of pad left. I'm DIY'ing, so in the interest of time was gonna just change fronts. Thinking the rears can be changed once for every two fronts. Thoughts?

Just so you guys don't think this is a completely off the wall question, I ask bc someone told me in the past that changing just the fronts and still using worn rears will cause the fronts to wear faster than usual due to the thinner rear pads creating a longer pedal.

Try these guys. Have bought many sets from them in the past. They also have some good info about bedding new pads etc.

Thanks for the link. I checked their tech section and they don't address my question. Probably against their best interest to do so. I'll prob just swap the fronts and see how it goes, they wear out annually anyway.

Sorry, I did not see your question. You should be fine just doing the fronts. I have done that many times. In fact, I just replaced the fronts on the wife's sequoia yesterday. Rears still had plenty left.

Good Luck!

No, replacing just fronts will not impact rear wear or vice versa

Try to recall who told you that and then resolve yourself to never again believe anything that person tells you.

Lol, now that's some good advice. I have replaced just fronts and just rears for years, but this person put a bug in my ear so wanted to get other opinions. I never even thought it was an issue until he mentioned it.

I used to buy my pads and rotors from him for my M cars. He sold me some Hawk pads once that squealed like the proverbial pig amongst other issues. After some back and forth Dave refused to exchange them for something else and told me he had never heard of the issue, it was due to my faulty installation (never mind that my tech at the BMW store had taken a crack at it also) and to **** off. I then contacted Hawk directly and their tech rep's exact words were, "that pad will never work in your application." Hawk promptly sent me a different set of pads, gratis. A few weeks later a thread popped up in a forum in which a few other members who had the same problem as I did said he told them the same thing, that it was the first time he had ever heard of the issue. And to think I used to send customers his way also...of course YMMV.

Thanks for the heads up.

Maximus,

My favorite pads are Centric Posi-Quiet Semi Metallic. I switched to them when I had my wheels refinished and had the rotors zinc plated. They have lower dust than the OEM pads but almost the exact same feel and performance

front pads do wear out faster

It makes absolutely no difference to front pads wear if you change rears at the same time or not.
Yes, typically fronts wear faster. What I do is to check those rear pads when swapping front ones.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm aware that fronts wear faster bc of the weight transfer and the bias. This particular person was implying that even rears would wear faster if rears were changed and fronts were not.

What sort of life are you guys seeing typically out of a set of front/back pads? I'm still at low miles (6K) and just changed the oil but I'm imagining the pads are still good - or should I check them out? With the '14 car and the brake assist I also wonder if that reduces pad life...

i cant be 100% sure without checking my invoices, but i changed my pads about 15k miles ago, and still have plenty left. as for brake assist, i would think that would affect pad life but i can't imagine by much (depending on your situation, of course).

Not sure about cayenne pads, but for the 63 these have been great on the street, and produce substantially less dust than OEM.
