since i've had the car, when i try and choose a song from the ipod it plays a different song and on the screen is says yet another song than the one that is playing.... wtf?

Pu the iPod in disk mode and rebuild the directory? I actually have eight iPods in various devices including two each in two cars. I haven't had your problem but I use Disk Warrior every six months to eliminate the potential for problems like that..
