C63 Coupe window trim removal. HOW TO.

Ok, after asking yesterday if anybody knew how to remove the lower rear chrome window trim on a coupe and getting no help I decided to give it a go anyway.

Needless to say it's actually incredibly easy.

All you need to do is to ease out the black plastic plug at the forward end of the trim piece. Then slide in a screwdriver and gently pull towards you to release the first clip.

After that using a plastic trim removal tool work your way rearwards easing the trim tool towards you to pop off the remaining clips. There is nothing to break as the trim piece lugs just push into metal grip fittings on the car body.

20 minutes to remove the first side and about 5 mins to do the other once I knew what to do. Off to vinyl wrap them now.

A few photos to show the general idea.

Upper trim removed as well. Not necessary to remove the rear lower piece. I just remov d these as well to make wrapping easier.

Looks fantastic! So all you needed to do was remove the plug and start unclipping by shoving in a screw driver and pulling ?

Yep. Use the screwdriver to pop the first clip. Then use a plastic trim removal tool or similar and work your way along to pop the rest off.

I used a screwdriver but anything that will fit in the channel will do. All you are doing is using it as a lever to pop the first clip then you will be able to get the trim tool into the gap between the window and the trim piece to pop the rest of the clips.

Just be gentle while you do it. Very easy to bend and break. They're not cheap either

Correct!

I think plasti dip is the easier way to go...

I`ll plasti dip my car next month - we will see how it works.

Sure plasti dip is easier but it doesn't look as good as vinyl. I have never wrapped before and I think the results are pretty good.

I've read all the horror stories about bending trim / breaking clips etc so I was dubious. Anyway it was all fine. Everything came off easily with no drama. Bottom line is to just go steady and you will be fine. Go at it like a bull in a china shop and yes you may break something.

I've plasti dipped my front chrome and star purely because it would be a nightmare to wrap. The wrap looks a lot more OEM. Oh, and overall it was actually quicker to wrap the trim than it would have been to plastidip it.

Decided to do the grill as well today. Removed the plasti dipped chrome trim pieces and wrapped with 3M 1080 Matt black vinyl.

Plasti dip v vinyl.

Star was a bit of a pig to remove

Wrapping it was character building stuff.

Not a bad first attempt.

All done

And fitted.

Hey -ian,

So which brand and thickness of vinyl did you used for the window trim? I am going to do the trim as well as the rear piece above the license plate. I have done a fair amount of plasti-dip on cars, but for the trim I think the vinyl wrap will look much better, and last longer. Plasti-dip has it's place, but in this case I choose the wrap. Nice work by the way.

Thanks,

Howie

Hey -Ian,

So on the grille, what areas did you wrap, and which areas did you dip? I already dipped my grille, but may remove it and wrap it. Just wanted some info from someone who has already done it.

Cheers

Howie

Nice write up! I just did this a month ago too. I used 3M GLOSS Black G12 Scotchprint Car Wrap Vinyl Film 1080 Series for the grill and trunk piece and satin black for the window trim. I bought two 5ft x 1ft rolls for $16 each from Amazon. I also got the squeegee tool from there also.

Lovely looking car. You just need to get your drl covers sorted now. I wrapped mine in cf.

I agree as well. That is a primary area I will be aiming at when I have wrap and tools in-hand. Has anyone removed those DRL surround pieces, and could you share how you removed them? Thanks.

On a similar note, has anyone here covered the front of their AMG with the clear protective wraps on the market as of yet? I just returned from an event yesterday and noticed at least one rock chip that will have me wanting to do some sort of protective covering for the front end. Any input on that from anyone?

Thanks

Thanks ian. Your car is looking sharp too bud. I ran out of wrap so I didn't finish the drl covers. Got more wrap but haven't gotten around to covering it yet.

I may just have to bite the bullet and try to do this one weekend, I plastidipped the borders of my grille and from a distance it looks fine but up close I'm not happy with it.

Hey -Ian,

How difficult was it to wrap these DRL covers? I am ordering wrap this week so I can do some of my trim over the weekend. Also what brand of wrap did you use? I just want to do matte black. Did you use any kind of vinyl wrap primer? Thanks.

Howie
