TPMS Versions

Are there different TPMS systems for these cars? I have an '09 and it only tells me if it senses a tire down but not which one. I thought when I test drove a '10 it showed the pressures for each tire. Was there a change to the systems between '09 and '10? I'll assume they can't be retro-fitted.

It is down to coding I think. I believe even in 09, the Canadian version had display each tire pressure.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Pre-FL cars have the TPMS incorporated into the ABS system. I don't know how it works exactly but something like it can detect a flatter tyre by the different rotation speeds/times of each wheel. Where as the FL models each wheel has an individual TPSM and it shows the pressure for each individual wheel.

The FL TPMS:

I believe the poor mans TPMS you mentioned was in place in certain countries. I believe Australia was this way. The PreFL in the US has actual TPMS sensors.

my 09 had them in the wheels. I really think they are the exact same sensors when i put BBS wheels on my 13 i'm almost sure the part numbers were the same.

TPMS Sensors are standardized. You can use many versions - the most common being from Schrader.

So Canada got the better coding AND push-to-start before the US. I bet it came down to the accounting folks and the economics of the exchange rates. MB could sell more car in Canada for the same profit as a lesser car in the US.

Yes, there were several varations (some country-specific). Some C63s use the ABS sensors to detect when one wheel is spinning faster than the rest indicating a flat, while others used discrete TPMS sensors in each wheel - which themselves also changed around the LCI face-lift so they are NOT ALL THE SAME.

If you can see individual tire pressures in your speedo center display, you have discrete TPMS sensors; if it just says "Tire Pressure Monitoring Active" it uses the ABS. As for the sensors themselves they did change at least in Canada - so the OEM Schraders from pre-FL cars didn't work with mine. Call MB and they will give you the right MB part number vased on your VIN - and to my (and possibly your) great surprise, the OEM MB sensors are actually CHEAPER from MB than the aftermarket Schraders.

No - actually it came down to the fact that (1) MB sells more AMGs per capita in Canada than anywhere else in the world, and (2) that most people here ordered their AMGs fully optioned so MB bundled everythging together. The cost of the car is the same wverywehere based on the options, but seeing as 9 out of 10 people here spent $90K on their C63s instead of $75K, they bundled all the goodies as one package. In 2013, you either bought the base car, or one with the APX package that had the P30 suspension (which you couldn't even order in the US any longer), P31 engine goodies, LSD, all creature comforts and interior/exterior options (CF trim in and out, HK Logic 7, nappa leather, etc), and you could only choose between the 18" or 19" wheels. In 2014, all C63s here were 507s. Your only choice was the colour. It suited *me* just fine - I knew exactly what the car cost, and didn't have to either nickel and dime or bang my head against the wall while trying to determine whether the passive lane keeping assist was was something I wanted to have and/or pay for.

It's not just a MBZ issue - Jeep did the same thing. 2007-2012 used an individual TPMS sensor in each wheel, and altho the system could tell that you really did have a low tire somewhere, it could not tell you which one. Jeep upgraded in 2013 to a sensor that could ID the pressure in each tire individually and the display changed accordingly. The newer sensors transmit at a different frequency and, as Diabolis noted with the AMGs, the sensors are NOT interchangeable.
