Gents, can someone tell me what direction the M156 rotates??? I'm in the middle of doing Weistec head studs and need to get the engine set at 40 degrees BTDC and I need to know what direction the engine rotates. Clockwise or CCW??? My guess would be clockwise since I've only ever worked on one engine that rotated CCW, but want to be sure and the repair manual I have just says "rotate the engine in the running direction". Please help guys!!!

The heads aren't coming off, engine is still in the car, trying to line up the balancer on 40° BTDC; I've disconnected the battery and don't want to risk damaging any sensors, modules, etc, since I have at least one engine ground disconnected, was hoping someone out there could just peak under the hood of theirs and verify before I go cranking this thing in the wrong direction.

Facing the front of the engine it rotates clockwise... what exactly are you worried about ? You can rotate it either direction by hand safely

It doesn't matter direction. Your just setting the engine to 40degrees. Turn it clock wise till you hit exactly 40. It helps to take the idler dust cover off and remove the idler to see the notch better. You'll see the MB tools fitting in nicely on the cams at 40degrees too.


Hope you drained the coolant, bolts go through water jacket.

I dont think it matters the direction you crank it.

When the car is in reverse any, the engine spins the other way anyway.

Lmao this isn't a snow mobile 2 stroke.

This is what I find funny about this forum, you got guys on here giving advice or input about head gaskets, head bolts, lifters etc and they can't even change their own oil or in this case, know how a car reverses.
