Winter tire size help
I know there are a lot of threads about winter tires, but none of them seem to mention the size they are getting. I have OEM 18" rims and am planning to buy a set of blizzak ws80s. Was planning to just get same size, 235/40 F and 255/35 R, or should i down size to maybe 225 and 245? Also I remember seeing someone running 225 all round, should i go that route? If i should indeed downsize what sidewalls width should i get? Need some advice on this as winter is coming. Thanks. Also to note I live around the Boston area so am expecting a lot of snow.

Depends on where you live and how much snow you get. I have 235 and 255 Blizzak LM32s, but we do not get a lot of snow in the Cincinnati area.

Yes, that is the size I currently run, since I could not find 255/35/18. A bit larger than stock in diameter but fits without issues. The speedo will be maybe 2 mph off at highway speeds.

If you are in a "regular threat" of snow area and this is your daily, get dedicated rims 4x225 as that is best for snow.

I cringe even thinking about how the 225s will handle when there is no snow...... I am considering to go to 275/35/18 (in Cincinnati). I will still get home from work if it starts snowing and worst case work from home for a day or take the SUV on the couple days with more than an inch of snow on the ground.
But if I lived in Toronto, I would need a different plan.

I ended up going for 235/40/18 in the front and 245/40/18 in the back. If you are looking for wider tires, I did find 255/35/18s for the ws80s, but they do not have it in the same load rating, so not sure if it is still safe to have them, can always give your dealer a call to see if it is okay. Blizzaks do however offer 255/40/18 for their LM32. Do note, I believe LM32s are more of a well rounded snow tire vs ws80s which are dedicated for snow.
