Dipstick - what to believe?
Checked my oil level at lunch. Car was fully warmed up on the way to work this morning, had been sitting about 4 hours. Pulled the dipstick and it was completely dry. Shocked! Stuck it back in and pulled it out, and it showed oil at mid-level, right between the two upper red plastic markers.
Which one do I believe?
And if you've got a good answer, can you explain why?

There are allot of threads discussing dip stick oil level on MB World but this is the first I've seen reporting a dry stick followed by one wet between the two red indicators without adding oil.
Follow the guidelines in the MB owners manual.
To me it sounds like yours is a bit low.

There is no reason!!!! The car should be checked 10 minutes after turning off. Then the oil sticks; however, leave the dipstick (after wiping it clean) in for about a minute. This will never fail. Don't bother reading the countless threads. You will just go crazy.

Also....i've heard....
Oil should be checked at 80 degrees centigrade for the true reading....and you should decide on a top up of oil based off that
If you're on the high side of oil in the sump, your idle becomes a bit rubbish
