My 507 does not have the factory fitted LSD. I asked my MB dealer if they can fit the stock LSD, but they said they cannot fit it. I live in South Africa, so my dealer may be a moron.
Initially I thought I wouldn't bother, but then the other day I tried to drift around a circle, and it just sucks without the LSD.
So I want to get the Wavetrac. I have a friend who imports parts from the US, who will be bringing it in for me.
What else will I need to get from my local MB dealer.
I know I should fit new seals.
Should I change the bearings?
If so, what is the part number.

 

I have my wavetrac going in next week. I purchased new seals and flanges on recommendation of a thread i found in search. I could not figure out from past threads if new bearings were required as well so I have left the parts with my shop for them to decide if the additional parts are needed or not. Also keep in mind some members have found their diff housings needed to be grinded down slightly (just a couple mm) to fit the diff into the housing. Seems like not all housings need to be ground though, we will see whether mine requires it.

yes! i ordered these parts as well. It was probably unnecessary for me since my car will be seeing minimal track time if at all, but I figured since the diff was being taken apart anyways I might as well throw on some beautiful fins

 

I had a quick look under my car the other day, and I'm pretty sure my diff has the cooling fins on it.
When I am back home, I will take a proper look.

 

I did wavetrack and updated all seals and bearings and placed OEM cooling fins. Very Very pleased. The car is awake now out of corners....

 

That heatsink is on the wrong way around. The fins should point forward under the diff. Was it installed like that?

 

I ordered my wavetrac as a package. 2 interior flange seals, both bearings, sealant, and the diff fluid. I also ordered the finned cover becuz racecar. Lol

That's my thinking. While I have it apart, I may as well replace the bearings.

Should I just stick with the OEM diff fluid, or do you guys recommend something else for the Wavetrac.

 

Just was on the Wavetrac website yesterday. They say keep the original diff fluid recommended by the car manufacturer.

 

I have ordered the Wavetrac. My friend is bringing it in for me.
Anyone know the part number for the bearings, and is there a MB part number for the diff fluid.

 

Here are the bearing part numbers you need.
Bearing - 230 350 03 49
Bearing - 230 350 02 49

You must use what they recommend for fluid which is 75w140. I use motul in mine.

 

The owners manual specifies Titan EG 5010 D which is Titan Sintopoid FE SAE 75W-85.

AFAIK, the 75W140 (Castrol LSD something or other) that's only used with the OEM clutch type LSD has friction modifiers which you do NOT want to use with the Wavetrac.

Wavetrac recommends either Motul Gear 300 (75w90) or Motul Gear Competition (75w140)

Edit: I don't track my car so I stuck with Motul Gear 300.

Very valid point. The OEM LSD is a clutch type diff, which requires friction modifiers.
The Wavetrac is a gear type, which does not use friction modifiers.
I wonder if the stock LSD fluid from MB has the friction modifier added, or if it's a separate item.

Looks like it's ok to use. Maybe the dealer does add a friction modifier separate or none at all?

 

I had a look under my car, and my diff does have the cooling fins, so that is a bonus.

 

Just wondering, what are you guys paying for the unit and install? Separate numbers, would be goood (ie price for parts, price for labor) if possible.

Expect to pay roughly 8 hours labour to r & r the diff housing & remove & install lsd. I got my kit from acg which comes with everything needed, new bearings, axle seals and fluid.

 

8 hours seems a bit excessive, no? I would think 4 absolute tops.
