stupid *** mechanic...
I went in for an oil change; however, only 2000 km had gone by so my mechanic said there was no need to change the filter. He put in around 9.2 liters which is what I usually put in when changing the filter as well. I got home (100 km drive) and checked the oil after 20 minutes. The oil totally covered the second red plastic piece. I figure half a liter to a liter too much. I am so pissed and terrified that perhaps I caused damage to the engine. He told me to drive back and he'll take out the extra oil. My reply was "no way." Could this extra oil have caused damage? I drove normally; not spirited.

Nah you're fine. I overfilled by well north of 1L by mistake once, and was fine. I usually make sure the oil covers that second mark also. And I only change my filter about every other time as I put maybe 2-3k miles on each oil before changing.

I've read so many "stories" on oil expansion and the rods dipping into the oil in the sump or the crank going "bad." I am no mechanic and I am slightly pessimistic so I tend to believe everything I read. I did notice my oil temp was really fluctuating though. 78 to 83 and then back. Sucks

Thanks
Is it technically possible to get out the oil through the dipstick hole. Can it be siphoned with only a tube and sucking on the end?

Yes, you can siphon it out via the dipstick hole. It'll be a lot easier if you have a mityvac or other suction type evacuators. For ****s and giggles, you can make a video of yourself sucking the oil out with a straw. lolz

you should be alright although i will siphon it as soon as possible.
also, i dont see the point of changing oil when you dont change your filter. not only its cheap, but it negates the point of changing your oil. its ok if youre just toppin up but to change the oil and leave the old filter? like flushing money down the toilet.

I believe that I changed the oil because it degrades and loses essential components. This doesnt happen to the filter.

I put in 8.5L the first time because the conversion was like 1L to 1.057qt, which looks almost equivalent until you multiply it by 8.5 and instead of 8.5qt, I had about 8.9qt. and that was without dumping the cooler. drove cross country just fine like that.

its not like it takes an extra $100 and an extra hour to change the filter. how much is 10L of oil and how much is an oil filter? ill just keep shaking my head.
let me guess, you vacuum your floor without taking off the mat do ya?

Your tech put in exactly the desired amount of oil IMO. And before you do another short OCI you might check this out and make up your own mind. (I've seen other tests that corroborate these conclusions).

^ The rule of thumb is that it takes up to 3k miles to fully activate the anti-wear additives in motor oil. Consequently engine wear is highest immediately following an oil change and declines as a function of heat and pressure. You may want to reconsider the wisdom of short OCI's.
