I thought I’d have to code it out. But so far nothing. No error code and no CEL. I’ve only started and idled the car and moved it a few feet around the garage so that may all change once I really drive it.

Was the below a false alarm?

No. I removed at least 20 other things that are causing errors like seat belts, seat back latches, airbags, rear hatch lights, headlights, etc. Ran Autoenginuity and nothing serious is happening. Just need to get all that stuff coded out at some point, for now it’s 15 clicks on “ok”.

I’m pretty sure the missing air injection will CEL at some point. It has to, it’s an emissions monitor.

Yeah no sweat. This can be done, I just need to go back and look at it more. I might go back to routing it inside along the subframe, then straight out through that half-moon-shaped hole. And you definitely lose the air pump and maybe windshield washing.

And if I had to start over I’d probably use 2” hose.

Just get Nissan GT-R Ti shims. Same size caliper/pad. They’re on eBay and I think Girodisc makes them as well.

So it’s been a couple weeks since my last update as I’ve been out of the country for work. Well.... she lives.

Started right up, drives fine. NO leaks or anything broken or missing. Had to remove the front bumper to get her out of my garage and up the steep ramp out, but will deal with that I guess. I have it down to 6 bolts and a 10min job.

So I had to take the car to a shop for the next stage of things I can’t do. After talking to a lot of people and a lot of shops out here, Serge at BenzWorks sounded like he was the most capable and enthusiastic about taking this project on. There are still a bunch of things left, in order from most to least critical:
1. Exhaust - 3” pipe from MBH x-pipe back to Magnaflows
2. SDW front thrust arms install
3. Align and corner balance
4. KMAC subframe bushings
5. AMS/Exedy clutch packs and trans rebuild
6. Convert rear KWs to true coilover

Really just need 1-3 done to get the car back out on track, the other stuff can wait until he’s less busy.

After talking to Serge, I drove down to Huntington Beach and dropped the car off Sep 26. Was told the car would be racked the next day. Great... 17 days later and it finally gets looked at. Well, Serge definitely knows what he’s doing as much as anyone, so I’ll just have to have a little patience I guess.

Nah. I wanted to see how bad the rubbing is before I remove the washer reservoir to make more room.
I figured I’d drive around like this for awhile in different conditions and turning etc, then check.

can't speak in regards to your experience but my own experience is that tuning shops really don't put you first, unless it's a job that could be completed in an hour or two. they'll always chose the quick dollar over the sweat. this is why I stick to repair shops for repairs or simple straightforward work and myself for anything else.

one of my race cars spent 4 years between 2 shops. neither finished the bolt in motor swap. the last shop took me for a couple of thousand of dollars of which I'll never see again.

hopefully your car is completed in due time to your highest expectations.

Listen, I totally get that. I understand that churning out quick tunes, repairs, oil changes is what pays the bills. I guess I’m just used to a different level of communication. And if I’m willing to pay for the time and quality of work, I don’t get why this project should be any different. Whatever, I’m sure it’ll all be good, just need to be patient. It’ll get done right and that’s what matters.

If it's touching do it right. Don't let it even rub a little bit. You don't want potential issues at the track.

I agree completely. I’m saying that I want to see how much they rub so I can then see how much I need to move the ducts.

Total agreement that I can’t have rubbing under ANY conditions. Testing.

Good news, work has begun over at Benzworks. Thrust arms had to be cut out because of those stupid seized bushings. Car looks to be in great shape otherwise.

Mufflers may not fit which is a huge disappointment. The length means that you can’t make the bend to join up the exhaust pipe in the space available. I thought I had measured all that out fairly carefully. I’ve got shorter mufflers arriving this week just in case and will go down there to have another look with it up on a lift. Short mufflers are single 3” in to single 3” out which is somewhat suboptimal because I didn’t want to have to weld on tips. We’ll see what fits.

Went over to BenzWorks today to check out the progress. They had to remove the thrust arms with an air hammer. Yikes.

Got slightly shorter Magnaflows and they fit great while retaining the dual outlets. For reference it’s the Magnaflow 12198 which is the same design as the 12298 except the body is 6” shorter and the dual outlets are 2.5” instead of 3”. It’s a relief that I don’t have to use those dumb things I posted above. Love free returns.

Exhaust piping is getting redone. It’s going to be full 3” stainless from the MBH x-pipe all the way back to the new mufflers. Can’t wait.

I’m a little more relaxed now. I’m a shïtty communicator over email - talking things over in person is always better. Car will be done when it’s done. Probably looking at the first week of Nov.

Wow! Great looking car Jim. I am in awe of the scope of modifications that you have made to this platform. I have done the typical brakes/suspension/exhaust/tune/weight_reduction/corner_balancing but you have taken it so much further. Still waiting to see you at America's greatest track (ok, hold tight. Wait until they bulldoze a few corners as it has become a bumpy mess). It would be awesome if I could be your steward for your first weekend at the track.

Thanks bud, it’s slowly getting to where I want it.

Man, I’d love to get down to COTA David. Will maybe look at doing it next spring, let’s figure out a full weekend event or something. I’m dying to get the car out there.

1500mi from here though... oof. It may have to wait until it’s at a point where I’m trailering it around.

I had a race out there in June, and they had shaved a couple of the rough spots. It felt pretty good. Have you been out there more recently?

Yes, I was out there last weekend and it's getting pretty bad, sorry to say. They have shaved some rough spots yet they persist. The shaved area right at T2 still has enough bump to make a person be less aggressive lest they get bounced off track. There's an entirely new bump coming out of T9 that interrupts those of us who floor it out of 9 heading to T10. Now you have to hesitate for 2 or so seconds, cross the bump then floor it. My student was in a Corvette ZR1 and we hopped the rear tires over that bump and his ECU threw a 'rear axle error'. The bump/compression at T10 has been shaved and resurfaced. It's back to normal where you can attack T10 at full throttle. If you watch recent YouTube videos you will see newer darker pavement there. And the one at T18 has been shaved but it is still growing. We were told to warn the students in advance. Some friends say they lifted throttle there just to survive and other said they adjusted steering in order to hit it straight on. But having steering input and going last year's speeds means your are risking getting tossed off track to the left. Honestly, I predict Formula 1 is going to be mad. I'll be watching practice rounds from home listening for commentary and complaints.
