make my c63 louder? Bay Area
did some research and now i decide to removed the secondary cat with straight pipes and replace the resonator with a 1.5 h pipe for my 12 c63 coupe. Just want to make my car a bit louder and keep the original AMG sound. So is this the best setup?
And the problem is I just called 3 different muffler shop today and they both told me that they can replace the resonator but they wont touch the sec cat since its illegal. So anyone can recommend an independent shop which can do both work near bay area

Where are you located in the bay area? I have had secondary cats replaced on two of my C63's at Sounds of speed, santa clara. About couple of hundred $ for installation.
For resonator delete, go to world Muffler in sunnyvale. The guy has good quality pipes and will do a custom job for you.

Secondary cats are located after the 02 sensors. In other words, they do absolutely nothing for emissions, but rather for noise.
It's surprising that some shops make a fuss over this.

Yea that guy told me thats illegal here and tell me that no one would take this job in his area... Just wanna get my car a bit louder. Had seen 2 c63 in front of me in highway 280 and they are ridiculously loud

Just because the cats are downstream of the second o2 sensor, certainly doesn't mean they do nothing for emissions. Your car just won't know that they're gone (but everyone else will. ).
Good luck from your east coast emissions brethren.

removal of secondaries and resonator will result in a pretty loud car.
i had resonator removed at the suggested World Muffler in Sunnyvale...real expensive though, he charges double what any other muffler shop would just to add some 18-20 inch section of straight pipe. i just wanted it done, but if i were to do it again, i'd honestly go anywhere as the resonator job is such an easy job.

It's not that loud at all to me but I guess loudness and sound are totally subjective.

The only way you're not going to pass emissions is if your O2 sensors are throwing a readiness code which isn't affected by the secondary cats.

I just passed CA smog 4 days ago with exhaust that's straight from cats back. No secondaries, no resonators, no mufflers and I too went to a STAR certified guy.

Not at all -- I legit passed. There's a lot of misinformation about this stuff out there. You can do just about anything to exhaust systems as long as you don't touch the actual cats (not secondary cats) in California. All you have to do is have your computer reading the right info based on your O2 sensors, and you're golden since California only smogs via OBD2.

yep...secondaries and anything after are not part of the "emissions" of the factory computer and removal of any of those while not compliant will not cause issues with emissions testing or validation.

Ok thank you. I know California is really strict but if that's true, I don't even need to worry about doing flanges and v band to revert back to stock for the smog test.

any grimy muffler only shop that isn't a chain should do it for you.
if you plan to remove the secondaries there is a vendor here that sells a replacement X-Pipe for the C63 that bolts in if i recall. for that you can honestly do it yourself if you want to pull out a sawzaw. the resonators any muffler shop could remove as this is not emissions or smog at all.

Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate that. Would you happen to know a place that would remove them? Every shop in SF I called won't do it. Also you wouldn't happen to know if I would have to revert back to the stock tune for smog do I? Thanks!
