Steering Wheel Vibration - Any other ideas?

Hi Folks,

So long story short, I'm having a vibration issue in my car that I can't seem to shake.

This is what I've done to try to fix the problem.

1) Got an alignment to factory specs with minimal toe in.
2) Brand new front tires (Hankook RS3's)
3) Removed all minor bends from wheels - Since I bought the wheels used, I guess I never knew some of them had bends in the inner and outer barrels. These were fixed, lips re-powdercoated, and reassembled.

Does this seem like a wheel issue still or is there something else going on? Driveshaft out of balance? (Think I saw this in another thread)

There has to be something cyclical going on because when I'm on the freeway doing 75+, I can see the passenger seat actually shaking a little, but I don't necessarily feel it on my back.

Another thing I'm thinking it could be: I have ball seat lug nuts and apparently for these works, I'm supposed to have cone seat. Could this be a factor?

Thanks in advance!

First of all, get the right kind of lug nuts. That's really quite dangerous. I'd bet that's the problem because your wheels probably aren't seated right, but also check the control arms and end links as if they're worn they could cause a vibration.

Just ordered some. It was a total oversight, quite frankly. When I ordered the Stud Conversion kit from Motorsport Hardware back in the day, I had OE wheels which required ball seat. I completely forgot the fact that I didn't have the right ones for the Works. Isn;t the seating more dependant on the hub? In other words, the whole point of hubcentric?

I'm hoping the new lug nuts fixes it, but I'm pessimistic at this point.

I ordered a set of Muller MSC-1 coilovers, which'll come with new sway bar end links so that'll be addressed, but I'll definitely check them over the weekend.

When I am in there though, I try to check for any play, but I can't seem to find anything alarming.

Sorry, I misspoke there above. Check your tie-rods too. Not end-links. Duh.

You have hubcentric rings on those work wheels?

Ball seat lug in a cone seat wheel won't torque properly. If yes to my question above, you're not seeing an out of round condition. It's a wheel that's not flat to the hub face. If no, you're probably seeing both.

I don't have hubcentric rings since they were build specifically for a C63 and thus are hubcentric.

They're likely not fitting flush.

Inspect your the ball joint on both front cross strust (LCA) as well.

EDIT: Just looked at the thread you linked. That rear spacer doesn't have a hubcentric lip BTW.

Well damn. A quick google search yielded a bunch of results stating that using ball seat lugs on cone seat wheels could very well cause vibrations.

What a bone head move on my part. New lug nuts should be here tomorrow.

Thanks for the pointers dudes.
