Just a black exterior because I am a glutton for punishment!

You don't legally need them anywhere in NA since they're past secondary O2. So hollowing out (if that's what you mean by drain) the secondary cats is a huge waste of effort.

The x-pipe KILLS a LOT of sound in the exhaust due to cross canceling the exhaust pulses against each other....I replaced the reso with an x-pipe and it sounded like ****(like a 19yo's Z71 with 'pipes leaving high school)...never seen the reso cut open but have heard from numerous sources that it is an h-pipe internally...and to be honest I fully believe that the AMG bark does in fact come from the reso....when I put mine back in and before I removed the back boxes I got the bark back

I'm going to try keeping the x-pipe (where the #2 cats were) and replacing the resonators with straights.
That's the recommendation of the guy who did the x-pipe in the first place, so I'm going to give it a try.

Update... chickened out and went back to stock (ie removed the x-pipe and put back the secondary cats).
I'm WAY happier with the stock sound.
Chalk this one up to a bad idea.

Straight pipe it all.
Eurocharged Canada likes to sell X Pipes because that's what they have pre-fab'd for install.
Straight pipe all the way back is the best overall sound / performance out of the stock AMG mufflers IMHO.

Memorial Drive lol ... Recognized that route immediately, done it a 100 times.
Here's another video of secondary cats removed and replaced with straight pipes:

Let me preface this by saying, sound volume, pitch etc varies from person to person depending on taste.
For me, an xpipe is a no-no on this motor because it kills the beautiful roar of the 6.2l. Secondly, the type of sound you want will dictate next steps. I wanted several notches louder, but stock sound. I went with Mike H pipe replacing the secondaries and his resonator delete pipes, which are straight pipes. I honestly couldn't be happier with the sound. The signature bark is still there, but the loudness makes it seem like it isn't there. It is fairly stock sounding on normal cruising, and a complete animal on half and definitely on WOT- which is exactly what I wanted. MY ONE AND ONLY DILEMMA NOW IS: should I do long tubes or not, which will make the car INSANELY loud , especially very cold starts.
others straight pipe everything and it's loud, but not for me.
To reiterate, it's all about personal taste. Good luck.

In my opinion, I think those that said just remove the secondary cats are right on if you want just a louder version of classic AMG rumble. Removing 2nd cats and straight piping to resonators.
Keep resonators. It contains a small H pipe inside, for a reason. Keeps the classy, "still take your girl to the restaurant" but now a lot louder WOT bark.
If you want to still take the car out and valet, drive down the neighborhoods and downtowns, it keeps her nice and classy. Then when you hit straight ways, let her rip.
If you remove the resonator you are hacking up a high quality beautiful OEM exhaust and getting that cheap rasp. Our exhaust welding and quality material is second to none.
KEEP resonators. Just delete secondary cats.

Yup. The stock resonator H-Pipe AND an X-Pipe makes very little sense.
I replaced the resonator with straight pipe and the sound was way too truck-like. Swapped in a small H-Pipe to match the one that's inside the resonator and was much happier.
