Warranty work has been authorized. Engine comes out next week.

I'll be cruising around in a loaner GLA250 for the next 1.5-2 weeks. Yayyyyyy

When you'll be getting the car back could you please ask them what exactly was causing the whining sound?

The list of replacement parts they ordered for your car is rather vast and I'm guessing it could be either the chain guides or the oil pump.

I really don't want the lower part of my engine to be disassembled for the oil pump to be removed

I always thought this sound was normal...I've heard it on E55s and C63s. Hell my own E63 makes this sound too but maybe a little quieter. I'll be surprised if it's anything actually bad.

BUT.....hey man...a fresh oil pump, cam gears and all installed the dealer can only be a nice thing for the motor that you have

That's what everyone keeps on telling me as well! Normal sound for any m156 amg vehicle.

The whining sound went down when they replaced all my idler pullies. It was still present, however.

There was another 'whirring' sound that was more concerning to the shop foreman. This is why they are pulling the motor and replacing said parts.

I will update everyone when I get the car back in my possession.

Good luck with everything OP. Definitely down to have a Toronto meetup once my headers are installed and your car is fixed. Are you on Fb MBTN group?

Got the car back today. All idler pulleys were replaced prior to engine being removed.

Engine components replaced:
  • Oil pump
  • Timing chain
  • Timing chain gears and rails
  • Head gasket

The 'Whirring' sound is gone. The 'whining' sound, which was the main reason I brought the car in is still present. It has definitely toned down but is still there. I don't recall my PFL C63 making this sound... but hey guess I'll just have to live with it.

Wow. I guess it puts a period in the question.

Now I only have to figure out whether my sound is "whining" or "whirring"

What does it feel like having so many brand new components in your M156?

so you got new head bolts since they had to replace the headgasket. not even sure if you needed them.

sounds to me like an accessory belt is too tight.

No, car is a 2013 so already had the revised bolts.

on my car the whining was very high pitched, almost sounded like an electrical ballast noise for HIDs. But when I would press down on the intake manifold it would lessen. Turned out just about every intake manifold bolt was loose.... - snugged them all down and whining went away.

I've always thought the often reported whining sound was just the C63 owners.

By "whirring" did you mean a grinding/scraping type of sound?

My car has a strange vibration issue which appears mostly when the engine is very hot (after driving in traffic). More of all I'm experiencing a grinding/scraping sound when driving slow.

The problem is currently narrowing down to the chain mechanism and oil pump. The car is not throwing any codes.

I feel this whining sound much more closely resembles a broken supercharger whine. I have this noise in the 2012 facelift model and it would go away once the engine is warmer. I have heard other cars have this noise that have built internals and mods. I'm not too concerned but I also don't honk on it until the noise goes away.

Did you get to the bottom of this in the end? I am in the same situation, but without the warranty. Next step are the 4 below. 2014 plate 46k miles on the clock. All advice welcome!

These threads suggest:

The M156 engine (63) does have a chain. but the intake and exhaust are gear driven, by a idler gear driven by the chain. it is a very cool set up. one other thing the engine oil pump makes a whine noise to.

Gear teeth wear down over time. They're also straight cut. The whine is normal.

EDIT: If someone here is replacing their perfectly fine 2014 adjusters, I'll pay for shipping to send them to me. Thanks!

I guess it's something internal, perhaps the chain.

I'm still trying to figure out the cause.

BTW do you by chance have slight vibrations from the car, when standing on a red light in D mode? It feels as if the engine is misfiring from time to time (really it isn't).
did you ever find out what it was? I have the same issue and get silent vibrations sometimes. I have a 2013 with 50k miles

this sounds like a normal noise to me. In fact in pretty much every car I've owned, 1st gear is a bit louder than the others, especially when you are over 50% revs
