C63 Whining Sound

Anybody have any idea what this whining sound could be? Pretty audible outside the vehicle... sounds almost like gear whine or an air pump. Cold or hot.. sound is present.

First video is 2nd gear cruising at light load
Second video is first gear
Third video is neutral

Sounds like a belt or a pulley since the noise follows the revs . Check out the tensioner pulley and all the idler pulleys between the main components. Goodluck

I did check the pulleys and noticed the lower tensioner, next to the AC compressor, has a slight wobble to it.

That sounds more like a fluid pump (water, PS).

An idler bearing generally makes more of a scraping sound when it's failing.

Hows your PS fluid?

What colour is it? Mine made that sound so I flushed it and now it's quiet again.

There's no service interval for PS fluid but it gets fkn nasty.

I have the EXACT same sound. It is always there no matter whether the car is warmed up or not.

I had a machanic remove the serpentine belt and the whining was still present.

I guess it's something internal, perhaps the chain.

I'm still trying to figure out the cause.

BTW do you by chance have slight vibrations from the car, when standing on a red light in D mode? It feels as if the engine is misfiring from time to time (really it isn't).

Update: Motor is being pulled

MB is pulling the motor and sending it off to their machine shop. Parts being ordered are oil pump, chains, guides and cam gears.

Thank god for warranty.

Well damn. The second and third video I noticed the whining sound the most.

What was their official diagnosis?

They won't really know until the motor is back from the machine shop. But the parts ordered give an idea...

From your last reply... I was getting a slight hesitation, almost like a misfire while idling at red lights every once in a while. Guessing it's related to this. Oil pump??

LOL

Dealer has a C63 booked for oil pump service.
OP brings in his C63 with Power Steering whine issue.
Dealer calls MB and says OP's car has an oil pump problem under warranty.
Dealer gets the parts for first C63 under OP's warranty, doesnt work on OP's C63.
Dealer says work is done on OP's car, OP leaves with same oil pump (which was fine to begin with).
Dealer makes money from free parts on oil pump service with first C63.
OP still has the same engine whine and brings it back to dealer.
Dealer states its probably PS issue this time, dealer gets more parts from Mercedes Benz under warranty.

It's all in good business.

Dealer needs to yank the engine just in case...

Well speaking from experience most do not. (I used to work at one through my first couple years of college. Just graduated last year so my findings are still recent!)

During my time at my local BMW dealer all parts that were covered under new car warranty, CPO warranty, and/or any recalls were sent back to BMW. You wouldn't be able to get away without sending the old parts back otherwise the warranty wouldn't foot the bill.

Now while there I was getting an oil leak fixed on my old E60 M5. I had a third party extended warranty at the time and the tech diagnosed it as a leak between an internal and external oil line. This required dropping the front subframe and oil pan. Basically a 12+ hour job by the books. The tech finished my car that day in less than three hours. I was very suspicious, it just didn't make any sense no matter how good you are. Long story short, management asked him to pull the lines again to see the manufacturing date. Turns out he never replaced the internal line. Just pocketed the difference in labor he made and kept the new part. This is what we can flat-rating (internal dealer jargon).

Sorry for the long post, but figured I'd explain what happens behind closed doors at the dealer sometimes. I doubt that's what is happening here especially since it's still under factory/CPO warranty. When in doubt you can always ask them to keep the old parts for you to inspect. If it's customer pay then you will always be able to take old parts home.

Dealership is now telling me we may have an issue.

They cannot find any service history from the previous owner (Guessing he didn't service the car at MB dealership). Because of this they are waiting to hear from the district FSM to approve warranty. . . . .

Did you buy the car from a MB dealer, and was it advertised as having warranty. If so, you should be fine.
