Smells like gas

Wondering if anyone has a super easy solution...

Recently got the EC v6 tune and have found that ever since, whenever I turn off my car and park it in the garage, it reeks of gas. I can't smell gas while driving, only after turning it off and parking.

I'm assuming it runs a bit richer and some unburned gas is sitting in the cats which continues to smell after turning it off.

Any solutions? Any way I can, short of de-tuning, get rid of the gas smell? Any other things I can test for that might be making it smell like gas that are different from what I'm thinking?

Thanks in advance.

When my car smelled like gas, it turned out to be a problem with the fuel filter.

I have the V6 tune and it does not make my car smell like gas at all.

Sounds like what happened to me. Don't think the two are related. Where is the smell coming from? If you can smell it in the rear driver side wheel well then it's either a fuel sending unit (my issue) or the charcoal canister.

Don't think it is related to the tune either, if anything V6 was leaner I think than v5

Thank you. I can prolly snag a fuel filter and do it myself this weekend...

Hmm...it is difficult to tell where it's coming from but I'll sniff around. Pretty sure it smells more at the rear of the car than the front though.

That's good insight. Thank you.

Quick update. I detuned the vehicle last night, drove it around, and it still reeks of gas. I'm going to keep on for a few more days and see if the problem persists. Then I'll start trouble shooting other possible solutions.

Yea exactly, it's the Rear driver side wheel well.

Boom, you were exactly right. It was the Fuel Sending Unit. Quite a bit of built up gas too.

And this is why I love the forums. Thank you!

Cool man, I'm happy to help, but not happy that it happened to you!

Nope, the fuel sending unit tucked up behind the back seats.

There is a video on YouTube showing you how to change the sending units. It doesn't look too difficult and the parts (for the seals) seem to be pretty cheap. Now if your whole sending unit needs to be replaced I believe you are just around $400 for the parts. I personally have an extended warranty on the car, otherwise I would have done it myself.

i have warranty too but its almost done and its on the "powertrain only" cycle. so i doubt something like this would be covered? as you know my car is getting a whole whack load of other service, MB is pretty much rebuilding it haha

Hate to admit I didn't do the work myself...but for stuff like this, I like to bring it to the dealership and pay more in order to have all the records straight with the car. Resale value?
