Chassis Vibration at 70MPH + Do these look "bad"?

Hi all,

So I've been chasing a chassis vibration for a while and don't know really where to go from here. The interesting thing about it, is while I can feel some feedback on the steering wheel, I can visually see the passenger side seat shaking back and forth while we're driving. I do not have hard spring rates either (F 9k, R 14K)

1) I've had my wheels and tires balanced multiple times with new tires in the front -- no change.
2) Changed my spacers in the rear -- no change.
3) Have checked (visually) for front end tears in bushings, etc. -- nothing that catches my eye
4) Many alignments later -- no change
5) Front wheels rebuilt by wheel shop to ensure front wheels are true, not bent, and 3 piece wheels are built with face centered -- no change

I'm starting to think that at this point, it could be something driveline related since I'm feeling this come through the chassis. What do you guys think of my rear axles below? I've gone down there and tried to wiggle everything and everything seems decently tight. I also do not see any oil anywhere.

Could it be something like diff bushings? Or some other driveline part causing the chassis vibration issue?

Thanks in advance.

Those axle boots look pretty normal, no rips or tears or grease leaking - the flaking layer of stuff is normal, mine look like yours.

Have you checked the drive shaft especially the center support bearing seems like you have checked most everything else, check for any play in the shaft.

The other thing you could do is get it off the ground like on a lift and run it up to 70 (or on a dyno) and see if it vibrates without the front wheel moving to narrow it down.

Does the vibration happen at certain speeds or does it increase with the rate the vehicle increases in speed ?

Maybe you can try illuminating the possible cause, wheels and spacer. And have stock wheel and no spacers.
there are 4 rear subframe bushing , mine changed when i added lsd. Maybe rear wraped rotors? How about tire? Are they not damaged like bubble side?

Okay, good to know. What exactly should I be looking for on the driveshaft?

I'll check about that. Not sure I have the guts to run 70+ MPH on jack stands so we'll see.

Not really. 70+ and it starts going.

The only difference would be to swap for 4 different wheels. I've tried it with different spacers, different tires, and nothing changed. I'll look into subframe bushings...

Check any play at the support bearing, up and down and left to right there should be absolutely no play, even a little will vibrate.

Does the bore size on your wheels match your hub? I noticed they are aftermarket.

Hub is a good place to look. My 750li would shake and vibrate when I added aftermarket wheel. Alignment, ballancing and checking struts and bushings didnt help. Added hub ring shims and vibrating stopped. My bmw tech mentioned it to me, told me bolts were only thing keeping wheel in place and since there was play, we're talking 1-2mm, got the vibration at higher speeds. Mine did it 55 and up. Worth looking into.

Same story with my old LS400. It took me like 3 months to get it figured out. Then someone totalled the car, luckily before i dropped $400 on custom 25mm spacers lol.

You can get rings for just a few dollars tho.

Yeah they're like 10-20 bucks for the set. They were so inexpensive my tire guy said ***** it and didnt even charge me for parts or install. Gave em $30 for lunch anyways. Good guys.

Yes, they were made specifically for a C63 so I know it's not hub centering rings etc.

It would be nice like others have said to get your hands on a know good set of wheels and tires to try just to eliminate anything to do with the wheels and tires as that is your most likely suspect to cause a vibration.

I'd love to. I just don't have any Mercedes owner friends... All of my friends are M3 drivers. I'll think about how I can make it happen.

Vibrations at 73 mph

had the same vibrations at 73 mph
Just look at the front passenger head rest when unoccupied! You could tell the frame vibrations! So I replaced the run flats with Michellins 235/45/18
I have the sport suspension 2WD C300
2016. Had the new tires Road Force balance! Problem solved
Note do not buy cheap tires! This sport suspension needs tires with soft walls
Like michellins. The frame of the W205 is super stiff and the suspension too hard for the light weigh, so the car jumps a lot. There are a set of michellins that are super quiet

If you go to a dealer, they should have a Picoscope. They work great and pin pointing vibrations as long as the tech knows how to use it. They can detect vibrations from driveshaft, engine/trans, or wheels. Might be worth doing if you have a vibration you can not find using the normal methods.

This is an older thread, don't know if he found the problem but he sold the car!
