Shops that will remove secondary cats in the Charlotte area?
Looking for a shop that will remove secondary cats in the Charlotte area. Every shop so far refuses to do it. My car is SC registered, if that matters.

This is why: Under federal law, catalytic converters may not be removed and replaced with "converter replacement pipes' by any person. The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments even prohibit private individuals from installing "converter replacement pipes" on their own vehicles. Anyone who installs such pipes would violate section 203(a)(3)(A) and (B) of the Clean Air Act (Act). In addition to federal law, forty-five out of the fifty States also have statutes or regulations which prohibit tampering with the pollution control equipment on motor vehicles or driving or selling such vehicles. Thus, vehicle owners who tamper with their own vehicles may be subject to substantial penalties under both federal and State law.
You are a walk-in, unknown to the shop. You could be an investigator from State DMV who is making the rounds, and yes, they do that. This is your first post here with no history whatsoever. Would I "give up" my shop to you and even then would they take the chance for what, a $150 job vs. a $10k fine and unlimited compliance/reporting hassles afterward for someone who comes with no recommendations from prior customers? NFW. That said, you will have better luck networking in your personal ring of local car enthusiasts who mod their cars...pretty easy to set up something like what you are looking for that way, I would think.

I've always found that Cash is King.
Show up unannounced with a stack of twenties in your pocket and be honest and discreet with the Owner.
Tell him you don't need a receipt and are paying cash.

I don't live in the USA but the way I interpret that snippet, would be that the shop is not the one that will get the fine, nor would they be held responsible if they made the changes. The individual whom owns or re-sells the car would be fined if it can be proven that THEY changed the car. It specifically states that the work cant be done on
and in addition to that it also says
A person or individual is not classified as a business or company.
Its almost identical to the law in Australia regarding tinting windows. Its not illegal to have a company tint ur windows below 35%. But if you get busted with illegal tint, you are responsible. Not the company, as in this example, they do not fall under the banner of being a "person or individual".

Hope this doesn't sound bad but a Mexican owned muffler shop 2 hours from charlotte will to anything you want. Maybe find one local but if not I can send you the addy to the one here. I had something done custom on a truck crossmember once and was expecting a $70 charge. The dude charged me $3 and just said "you come back!"
