W204 Steering column loose

Hi,

Iv had this issue where it feels/seems that the entire steering column is loose. The steering wheel moves up and down and left and right. Had them check it and they want to replace the entire steering column out of warrantee. Getting a second opinion the mechanic mentioned that the steering column bushings have collapsed. Merc does not sell the bushes separately. I need your advice?

There is a little piece that sandwiches two pieces made to collapse in an accident. It isn't available separate, its reverted together. I have been able to replace the rivets and get it tightened up. Seen it happen from jerking on the steering wheel while its locked.

Respectfully... there are two things on a car that I would never, ever take any chances with, under any circumstances... things that you always service without cutting corners or taking shortcuts and that you not just double but triple-check: the brakes and the steering. Get the freakin' steering column replaced and don't try to cheap out on this one.
