Weird sound on acceleration - pinging?

Now when the weather is nice and warm and especially when I’ve been driving around with the windows down I’ve started noticing this sound more often. I can hear it really well when driving beside some wall (I guess the sound is just amplified). I did some research on this topic and came to an answer - could this sound be the cause of the engine pinging? The video is filmed with the Eurocharged V7 tune. When I loaded back the stock tune I couldn't reproduce the sound. There is also one other topic where some members have had the engine pinging issue with the V7 tune, but I'm not sure if the sound is actually engine pinging.

Any feedback/input from you guys?

I have a similar creaking/chirping noise on my C300 that I believe is coming from the transmission on hard acceleration/high RPMs

That doesnt sound good. Does sound like pinging. What fuel are you using? Are you tuned? Spark plugs OK?

Spark plugs replaced in April, fuel is 98 (European what Mercedes suggests on these cars, so should be absolutely fine) and Eurocharged V7 tune. I haven't heard this sound with the stock tune what I put back on my car on Sunday. Also mentioned this on the first post.

Sounds like engine pinging to me. Personally I think the V7 tune is junk on this platform and would never put this on my car. This many people shouldn’t have a problem. Eurocharged’s stuff on others is solid though.

Reach out to eurocharge to get the tune fixed.

I have a similar issue and have been trying to figure out what it is myself and have been working with my tuner to see if it is tune related. Similar to yours where stock tune is less noticeable/non-existent, but a newer tune which has an adjustment for cam timing and burble is much more noticeable. I at first though it was misfire/ping/detonation/knock, which it still might be, but I am more leaning toward it being cam adjusters slamming back and forth because of a worn pin? Just replaced the spark plugs and cleaned the air filters and always run 93 V-Power (USA) and have had the issue regardless of temperature.

Other thought was timing chain/chain tensioner slapping back and forth because worn or faulty. I have yet to see a CEL or throw any sort of code, which to me, if there were several misfire events the ECU would throw that code once the threshold has been exceeded.

I am at a loss, but plan to pull the valve covers when my new valve cover gaskets arrive. If nothing there ill be bringing it to my tuner to see whats going on. Keep me posted if you find out any more information, last thing i want to do is blow a hole in the top of a piston or worse!

EDIT: not using a Eurocharge tune

Jerry from Eurocharged just sent me a new file saying I had an early revision of their tune. I will load it on the car the first thing in the morning and see if it makes a difference. And yes, I already contacted him before making this thread, just wanted to make sure it was tune related pinging I heard. Also, if you don't notice the sound or if it is less noticeable with the stock tune them it seems logical that your issue is also tune related.

I have this issue with my V7 file after being sent over updated many times it never worked for me , I’m on V6 and it never does it . That is the sound of ping . Hopefully the new file works for you and it wasn’t a waist of money like it was for me !

I will flash a new map today and lunch and try again.

Is there any way to monitor misfire/knock sensor activity onboard? My Autel diagnostic tool doesn't have the ability to live count. I'm thinking back to my Cobb Accessport STI days where there was live channel data for knock sensors.

You can monitor timing retard/advance and see if both banks are even and not dipping on each other.

Thanks! I tried to do it real time with a passenger helping with limited success. Will see if I can plot and save to sit down and really look at it and hopefully post here.

I think the new tune resolved my issue, will take the car out tonight and try to listen some more, but in the morning and yesterday night when driving around I couldn't hear it anymore. Jerry sent me 91/95 octane tune, the first one I had was 93/98 octane (98 RON being Premium fuel here in Europe what is required for these cars). Haven't noticed any power loss either, but will e-mail Jerry back and ask what are the downsides of this "weaker" fuel tune.

You need to have the car under load high gear low rpm and then it will be clear if the ping is gone or not . Difference in octane will be adjusted accordingly through the factory fuel trims and will retard timing .

having same problem here, tried multiple different tunes from EC and a few others I have with hptuners. This problem didn’t start until I installed eflexfuel kit and injectors.(about 50 miles later) Noise is same level on e85, 93, and 110. Next step is to pull plugs and go from there. (Waiting on injector pigtails to bypass the flexfuel)

Tried to flash back to the stock tune yesterday but the flasher kept dropping the connection. Scary thought to have it drop connection mid-flash and brick the ECU. Tried again this morning and was successful, will head out at lunch time to see if I can hear it and see if I can catalog timing events.
