Ok, so I replaced the oil with liqui-moly and ceratec.

the whining got slightly quieter but its still really loud..

I guess like you say these "snake oil" cans are juat masking the problems with the M156.

Mercedes will never admit this engine is pants, but for a 70,000 mile engine it sounds like a bag of nails.

So nobody on here has diagnosed this issue?

Most pre-facelift cars sound the same.

A v8 like this should be almost silent.

Anyone got any ideas?

post a new video...all the videos you posted really are of very normal sounding M156 engines. don't buy a british car...you'll be in the shop for more problems if you went British.

I do love the car, but it only sounds good when you rev it if you know what I mean...

Not the whole engine no, the idler bearings, tensioner, belts and alternator I put on are fine!! :p

My video is here...car is going to the dealer tomorrow so they can listen to it, I know what they're going to say "normal for engine type and age" or some crap...

Also get a little rattle...sounds like lifters when I pull out of my road on after a cold start..

that's the same video as before...your engine sounds normal. good actually. that is just the sound of the engine. probably the adjusters, but that is the "NORMAL" sound. maybe even just the sound of lifters...all normal sounding. if it gets louder then we have something we need to talk about. my engine did have that same sound but much louder from time to time...replaced the lifters...still had the noise. flushed the engine with liquimoly flush and filled with motul 8100 and ceratec...noise went away. now sounds like yours.

If the car continues to perform like it always does well then I guess I can live with it...

Ill do a flush next time too.

they are probably power steering reservoir or oil pump issue. i recalled this has been discussed before.
