Hand built? The guy must have used his feet.. 🤣

Hi there, Ive combed this forum and can't find any info for the life of me..

Does anybody know if M156 cam adjusters sound like this when they fail?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zPrIVvVkukY

I would be very grateful for any info from any of you geniuses out there..

Ben.

The whine? Someone posted that this is due to the use of Mobil 1 oil and since switching to another brand oil the noise went away. Supposedly its the oil pump.

I just put M1 0w40 229.5 in.

I will drop the oil out and go castrol 5w40 then as I think you may be on to something, I'm reading more and more about manufacturers changing to 5w40 so it can't hurt to try..

Cheers for the info.

Mine used to do it when I had 0w40 Mobil 1

I switched to Liqui Moly 5w40 and no more
Now I use Molygen

Most of the active guys on the C63 and E63 forums use Motul X-Cess 8100 or Liqui Moly oil. Addition of Cera Tec or MoS2 from Liqui Moly as well and you'll be golden...

Cheers guys! Hachiroku thanks! I've ordered the liqi moly and some ceratec to see if that makes it quieter.

Thanks,

Maybe you need to let some air out of the tires (or possibly hachiroku's head, which also appears to be full of it) because someone posted it may be due to the hot air and see if that will fix it. As far as oils go, Mobil 1 0W-40 is pretty close to the top of the list. It will not mask problems that your car may have like some other thicker oils might, but objectively speaking it is easily better than 80% of the stuff on the market.

That noise is NOT caused by the oil. And, if your lifters are still ticking 30 seconds after you start the car - with 0W-40 with flows better than any 5W-40 when cold - and you rev the motor to boot so you've built up as much oil pressure as you ever will, you do have other problems. Just saying... the oil is not to blame.

So I was just dreaming about my engine not being fkt?

Tasos said open the valve covers before it's too late...

I have a decent platinum RAC warranty that cost 3k and it covers everything upto 20k's worth..

Should I stop driving the car based on the noises I hear?

I might whip the covers off just to check for any visible damage but I really haven't read enough to remove the CAs 😑

as far as the noise, i'm only repeating what another said...

as far as oil quality, sure Mobil 1 can do its job well...but think of it this way, a Ford Fiesta and Ferrari F40 both can get you to your destination...but which one will be do a better job and get you there quicker?

The Ford Fiesta...

Edit: OP, the whine sounds like your PS pump.

That's what I thought...

I've replaced the reservoir as they're only cheap, added new febi pas fluid, I didn't flush it fully though just removed the line that goes to the cooler which iirc is inside the radiator?!

My freind cant even hear it when the windows are shut..

I think it's the oil pump, apparently it weighs like 5kgs and is a big pump, there is stuff about it being a beast and overkill etc.

Removed Auxiliary belt but noise remains.....

Maybe its too thin?

My issue is whining, I dont get lifter rattle on startup.

Ideally I do need a supercharger to hide the sound...

to add...I've had whine before and the sound was coming from the power steering pump...I had my local shop replace the fluid with new MB fluid and the whine was gone.

after listening to your video again it does as Jasonoff mentioned, it does sound like your power steering pump. can you isolate where the sound is coming from? I should have listened to it much carefully my apologies.

One of those additional videos is mine. My PS pump, reservoir and fluid were replaced and the noise remains.

I was thinking a leak in the intake manifold but I haven't replaced the gasket yet. My vacuum at idle is not within the "normal" range so that's why I'm thinking its the gasket.

What are your idle vacuum numbers?

Good point about the inlet but I really do think its a rotational bearing sound.
I have no way of measuring vacuum that I can think of... how did you measure yours?

I'm going to hunt round the engine with a stethoscope and bore scope to see if I can get any closer...

But yeah, I ran it with no belt and the noise was still there..

That p##sed me off

How long has yours been making noise?

I would remove the serpentine belt and make sure its not a pulley bearing or something driven by that, all front end belts off to check. If it still makes the noise then I'd suspect chain guides or something similar. A mechanics stethoscope would help on this they are fairly cheap.

The noise is located at the front of the camshafts, more pronounced on the side with the oil fill cap.

Its got to be the cam adjusters but even if I took the covers off I wouldn't know how to check them..

Any ideas?

Had the aux belts all removed and its definetly still there...

Okay guys, I've spoken to a local specialist.

He said not to worry, it's the inlet cam adjusters.

He was doing 2, one on a facelift and one on a pre-facelift.

What happens is the adjusters fail, causing cam bucket noise eventually.

Not sure...I had both camshaft adjusters replaced and the noise remains.

And just like you, the noise comes from the area of the oil cap

I've had this noise for maybe 10 months. You can measure vacuum with the torque pro app and a bluetooth obd connector

Well there's a place in the UK called MSL, they are hot on mercs because they do tuning too.

He says it's common.

He also said my advice to you my friend is to leave it! :0

There's a reason why he said that too, he has replaced lifters and cam adjusters in the past only to have it come back.

Did you have brand new adjustment gears?

I'm going there on Monday so if I can get my head around what causes it, how they work, and how they fail ill keep you posted..

My video on youtube someone just posted "oil pump"
