0w40 vs 5w40 oil
People,
I read much about 0w40 or 5w40 for the m156 engine, both are approved by 229.5.
my question: I live in Western-Europe with normal temperatures, in summer I go with the car on vacation to Eastern europe (35/40 degrees temperatures)
What oil you guys recommend for my m156 engine, in according to my regio (Western Europe with normal temperatures), can't find a direct answer on this.

Why is this sheet recommending 0w40 or 5w40 for the m156 engine in Western Europe?
Restriction: Only SAE 0W-40 und SAE 5W-40 engine oils are allowed !

It is for me not clear which we should use for the m156 engine. I recently changed the oil to Liqui Moly 5w40 with 2 bottles of cera tec.

The bottom line is this, as long as the oil is 229.5 compliant you can use it. I specifically use only Mobil 1 0W-40 in my M156.

It's a street driven car in normal temps (not desert or track use or the polar ice caps). use any 229.5 spec 0W-40 or 5W-40. it's not rocket surgery. change it on time, and you will be fine.

I dont know about you guys in the US but here in the UK all MB dealers switched from 0w40 Mobil to 5w40 Shell Helix Ultra about 3 years ago. Ive had my car since new in 2013 and after the change to the different grade when the car was two years old ive noticed slightly lower temps and also engine less noisy.

Do you live in an area that has freezing temps in the winter? If so, this might help you make up your mind.

A lot of people here like the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40. I don't think it's MB approved though. The "approval" conversation generates a ton of back and fourth about oil additives and detergents, etc...

I use Castrol EDGE 0W-40, which is Mercedes Benz 229.5 and 229.3 approved, and also BMW LL-01 Porsche A40 approved.
The Mobile 1 0W-40 shares the same manufacturer's approvals, but lacks BMW's LL-01.
I'd consider an approved 5W-40 only if living in extremely hot areas (desert etc).

RedLine 0-40
I live in the northwest we get temps to about 19 degrees to 40 winter and up to 90 in the summer sometimes where I live. I run 0-40 for two reasons it covers the highest temp range. The main reason is when it’s cold the 0-40 is thinner so it gets to where it counts THE CAM SHAFTS where the 156 has wear problems on cold starts and cold days. Redline oil has better oil bar none, than any other oil in my opinion. I own a 156 P31 2019 GLC 63S Coupe as well as my retirement gift 2018 911 Turbo S. I race and 1/4 mile all my cars their all tuned and have mods. You can feel the difference when you run RedLine Oil.

0-40
One last thought. If you run your oil to the bitter end you get what you get as far as wear problems. I personally change oil at 2k or less the way I drive. 3k is probably best for most in my opinion.

I just did a oil change yesterday and used Motul 8100 X-Clean which is 5W40 but is MB-Approval 229.51.
Also did the diff with Motul Gear Competition 75W140.

That’s an approved oil, and good one, although the wear items on the M156 should be in your thoughts. I struggled with the back and forth also. I decided with help from my AMG tech that 0-40 RedLine was the best for my P31 M156 it covers the cold start and cold days as best as possible to minimize cam wear as well as other internal parts. The heat here in the NW 90 degree days are here and their also our summer starts July 5 and ends middle to late October. Most days during summer are 70 to 80.

Yup LSD, I just thought I’d stick with Motul seems like a good brand. It took me nearly 2months to try and decide what oil to used in the engine because everyone has a different opinion. In the last couple of months I started getting the rattle on start on on the passengers side which could be a few things so might try a few different oils in the coming months and possibly an additive like Proma MBL8. Anyone ever tried Proma?
