2008 C63 coolant smell in cabin when using heater
strange issue, get a strong coolant smell in the cabin when using heater, last about 5 min then seems to clear up
if you put the thermostat at full cool with a/c on doesn't do it
but if either driver or passenger thermostat adjust any above the coolest temp setting coolant smell comes thru the vents
recirc/fresh/ac on or off doesn't matter, get no coolant smell or coolant loss outside car, just thru interior vents, expansion tank stays full
is this a known issue? suspects would be evaporator or heater core? is there some clamps or something I can check or internal core issue ?
I assume either is dash out
watched hoses on both sides going thru firewall all dry
I assume when any heat is requested there is a valve that allows coolant to circuate thru the heater core, just cant find any leaks
has to be leaking internally or something but the level never comes up low, coolant is full and looks good
the smell is heavy coolant smell thru all vents, is dissipates but is noticeable
One was left long enough that vapor began to be emitted and fogged the windscreen.
The bad news is on both cars it seemed as though the heater core was hung from a string in the factory then the entire car was assembled around it. By this i mean it took me hours of dash disassembly to get to.
I'm not sure about these.
I think one of my old Mercedes had this type of initial leak and I did nothing about it and it didn't get worse.

However, I did read a lot about radiator stop leak products and 3 weeks ago I fixed this issue by purring only half of 125 ml of Liqi Moluy radiator stop leak in the expansion tank and the problem is complacently disappeared now. Just make sure to follow the instruction and not to leave the engine set off for long hours during first couple of days just to prevent the thermostat from being contaminated by the additive.
By the way, I still smell slight coolant smell from the vents which I believe is only residual and it will disappear by the time.
