^ The cheese grater engines also probably get rebuilt with about a thousand times more frequency than your regular car engine does. Air quality doesn’t matter.

I did a test using OEM type paper filter vs k&n and pro drys and used a shop vaccum blowing air instead of sucking and the paper filter let way more air through them.
I run stock air filters on my car now.
I'm not sure what paper ones I have but they were bought on Amazon for cheap

Been running KandN for over 7 years in my C63 with not one issue. They are washable and attract particulate phenomenally. The thing with the oil is that you barely, BARELY spray a VERY VERY light mist of oil. People are soaking these filters which is not what your supposed to do. On top of that, you let the filter dry over night, and wick the surface before placement. People install them like syrup soaked pancakes and obviously have issues with MAF.

For dedicated track rats, yes, but I'm referring to street-rods... Go to any decent car meet and its clear that some guys have sunk their life savings into the motor and don't plan on rebuilding ****.

The other thing to consider its what car this is going into. As far as I know, the air filters are not a bottle neck in the overall intake system on the M156, which is why I don't see the point in chasing every last CFM of flow unless you're running a Whipple or something. For N/A cars, the aftermarket dry filters should give you a bit more flow over OEM, while maintaining better filtration than an oiled cotton gauze filter.
With all that said, I had run oiled cotton gauze filters (K&N, Injen, Airaid etc.) on several cars since the 90s and for over 100k miles on a few of them with never any issues. I think most of the issues you hear about is user error with people using way too much oil after cleaning.
