When I'm in Comfort, Sport, or Sport Plus, I sometimes shift down to accelerate quicker and not have to wait for the computer to guess my intentions. How ever, I haven't figured out how to re-activate automatic shifting right after that. One time, it would not go back no matter what. On another occasion, it went back to auto within seconds...
Is there a way to instantly send it back to auto? Selecting Neutral and back into Drive works, but only when you are able to stop, otherwise doing that switch while moving doesn't sound like a great idea.

What are these things of which you speak? C? S? S+?
I put mine in "M" as soon as I hear that glorious cold start...

IIRC if you shift all the way up through the gears, it will end up in full auto. I haven't done this is a very long time, though, but give it a try.

Too vague of a question. Auto will almost always shift more accurately/quicker than a manual (user error). If you are talking about the quickness of the shifts themselves, if you were to pull and activate them... no difference. Same shift speed if you were to use the paddles vs the knob/shifter to shift.
If you let the car shift, S+ is more aggressive in shifting compared to C or S but you can't really compare it to M. Hoped this helped some.

As mentioned, hold the right paddle shifter and will go to auto mode and if using the gear knob, hold to the right (upshift as well) until in auto. I remember I got my C350 back in 2008 and went into manual mode few times and freaked out; would stop the car, shut it off and turn it on to reset it hahaha
