2009 C63 AMG - $21,990 - 56k Miles - Worth it?
Hello, I've just been browsing around and have been looking into getting an older(ish) C63. It's a 2009, has a little over 56k on the ODO, and looks to be in pretty good shape. I'm not quite familiar with these cars and was wondering what I should look out for, if anything yet? The car has a clean carfax, 3 owners, and has been listed for 45 days. That's the part that kind of gets to me, because it seems like such a monstrous car for such a low price, and was wondering if there's something that people are avoiding this car for? Any help is appreciated, thanks so much.

I would look for MY 2012 and above (facelifted cars). These have the updated head bolts, and personally I prefer the transmission over the pre-facelifted cars (MCT vs conventional TQ).
Also, the exterior and interior changed post 2012. Unfortunately, the M156 engine gained a bad reputation because of the head bolts, cams, tappets, and cam adjusters.
EDIT: All M156 engines before mid-2011 have the defective head bolts. It is a time bomb. If you want to check for 2011 cars, you have to look for the VIN & engine serial number.

Good luck.

So should I see if they at least replaced them or should I just brush it off and browse another time?

If you've got the funds, it is a wonderful car. But, this isn't a cheap car to drive. A head gasket here, a valve cover there, some bushings, a shock, a malfunctioning cpu, a fuel sender, some engine mounts, ignition coils, etc.
I could probably afford a nice RAV4 of I simply kept my AMG parked. 😉

Seriously don’t listen to a lot of this Internet forum crap. Headbolt replacement is about $2k and it’s not even a big deal. If the car has a really clean interior and exterior, service records, no major lemon like issues and has been well maintained, you can do a few things on your own at a reasonable cost. It’s the cost of owning any high performance car. I have a 2010 and did the headbolts and it has been a joy to own and drive. After 10 years, ANY car is going to need some TLC.
