I was wondering why you decided to sell the Renntechs and looking at these other ones.

Sadly enough they will probably accelerate the wear.
There are billett cams for other engines and it wears the buckets hard.

Cams need to be coated with some slippery coating.

Exactly. Harder cams equals faster wearing buckets. If you do this you’re getting the SLS Black Series friction-coated buckets and springs at the very least. Are billet cams “drop in”? Sure, if you want to tear it apart again in 5k miles to do the lifters.

You never (shouldn’t) do cams without the lifters because the surfaces mate to each other. In other words. Ceramic coated lifters.

In the M156 the issue isn’t just the cams it’s a combination of the lifters, cam adjusters, AND cams. So do all and like it’s been mentioned if you open the head up you need to replace gaskets and the adjacent parts like bolts and whatnot. Some bolts are TTY! I will agree to do it properly it would cost 10k at minimum. That also depends on how much the gulf-performance cams cost if you go that route.

if you work on it yourself you’ll need the special timing tools and knock on wood you don’t screw that up and end up with a larger bill.

all these "tuners" love the supercharged & turbo motors for with little more than adding boost you make 100hp even more. The M156 motors were the best mercedes could do yes maybe eeking out a few more horsepower from dry sumps etc.

so if you think there is going to be a cheap route of increasing your hp on a M156 it's never going to happen. Yes you might have a supercharger, longtube headers and throtle bodies to get 600 - 650 the difference is that none of the other motors will never have the M156 sound

Trust me, i know about all that.
But billetcams are made from non 'selflubricating' steele. and thereby wear the buckets harder, or if unlucky it wears the cams faster.

Seen it often in other engines.
billetcams are good in the m113 engine thou, due to roller rockers.

If you do go with the route I’ve mentioned, the hope and goal is that itll last way longer compared to the stockers.

Anti friction coatings are used extensively to reduce wear, and there is no reason they couldn't be used on billet steel. Newer DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coatings were developed specifically for the purpose of reducing friction and wear in applications where high pressures between sliding metal surfaces are encountered. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the coating used on the Black Series M159 buckets with the "black" coating.

The low friction properties would reduce wear on both surfaces, even the uncoated one, because friction will be significantly reduced. I definitely would at least go for the SLS Black Series buckets if I were to drop the coin on these camshafts.

I agree!!!!

I like how hes fully documenting everything with the car, as in maintenance and all specs etc. Hes not just trying to sell cams. Hes trying to show what these cams will do given all other variables the same. Which is the way it should be.

Yeah I dont get why some people are hating. This is by far the best review to test out cams and making the stock car run as best as it can.

He could of just put the car on the dyno with bad adjusters and worn cams and been done with it but chose to fix it first.

I’m not hating, 0%. Just saying that he could have had a car properly baseline tested and up and running on the new cams in 4-5 days like some of his other projects, rather than 4-5 weeks (so far).... I’m dying to see what these things do. He knows exactly what he’s doing, the demand for these are gonna be through the roof when he’s done. His phone will be ringing off the hook.
