Hello MBWorld fam,
I would greatly appreciate some help and advice - I am looking to buy a C63 and came across a 2010 car with 160K miles for a reasonably low price. The headbolts were done at 100K and the seller says the car is mechanically sound and has been maintained properly and on time. I have not seen the car in person, however my biggest concern before digging any deeper is reliability.
Should I even consider buying this car? If no, please let me know why. If yes, what issues should I be worried about with 160K miles on the clock? Are the high miles an indication of good performance and reliability or could this car start showing/experiencing a lot of issues in the near future?
I have previously owned a 2002 c32 (sold 2014), 2005 C55 (sold 2015) and 2009 C63 (sold 2016) - I have quite a bit of knowledge on these cars but no experience with very high mileage examples. What questions should I ask the seller?
Any advice would be very helpful, thank you!

Sounds terrifying. Personally I don't buy any car over 80k miles but that's just me. Use all the money you'll use for potential repairs and get something closer to 100k~. Saw some for $22k for that mileage

Every car is different. I would take a 160k dry state car driven 3 hours round trip each day as a commuter over a 40k East coast car driven 1 mile to work and back and taken to the drag strip every weekend. It’s all about the car.

I wouldn't be too quick to say pass on it, as you didn't post the price. Definitely make sure there is documentation for the head stud replacement, as that is probably the biggest risk with these cars and can make or break the value of an older model. If possible, I'd also check the cam lobes and lifters for wear. Other than that, do a PPI at a dealer so you know what you're buying. If the price is appropriately low, you could be getting a cool car at a great value.

You must be talking about this one:

Yes, I'd buy it. Great deal, bottom of the depreciation curve. Big items have already been done. Only issues i see is that its a pre facelift, and our cars (mine included) is a bit dated. For 10k more, you can get a new model facelift with updated interior. Really up to you.

I have nearly 100k miles on my 2009 and if totalled, I would gladly pay $12k for a replacement, but those miles are high...
I would suggest running the pending codes with a scanner and also reading the long turn fuel trims. If way off (close to 10%), it may be soon in need of an intake manifold.
If you are emotionally ready for a few $3-4 k repairs every year or two and don't mind the aesthetic front bumper... at least have a mechanic check it out if you are not skilled to do so.

170k miles on m156 e63, bought at 102k. I would do it all over again, no questions asked. Have had it for 3.5 years and have loved it.

I can get you a 2009 with 130k miles for $13,000 in south Florida, it seems good and the guy wants to sell as he’s moving I think. It’s worth the extra grand for 30k less miles

130k or 160k you’re going to be replacing stuff no matter what. Originally Posted by WreckMyE55

Hey BalanBro, thanks for advice, the car is actually the one in the craigslist link SatelliteMan posted below your response. It's listed for 12K. Do you think that's a fair price if everything checks out? I definitely want to take it in for a PPI.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
Hey SatelliteMan, yes that is the car! Nice work!
At first glance it seems to be a good deal and it seems like the high miles have prompted the owner to stay on top of the maintenance over time. I would definitely prefer a facelift car but for the money it's a lot of car even pre-facelift. If I can negotiate the price down I would keep the savings aside for potential repairs.
Thank you for your response I appreciate the advice!

Hey Dogtag114, thank you for your post I appreciate it! Sounds like you've had a great experience with a high mileage example. I will definitely get a mechanic to take a look for peace of mind!
Hey dinman, thanks for the post, this gives me some confidence on the whole matter. If it checks out and the price is a bit negotiable hopefully ill close on it.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
Hey WreckMyE55 thanks for the post. Do you have any additional information on the car? Do you know if the headbolts on it are done? I don't mind a high mileage car as long as the bolts were taken care of. Please let me know, thank you!

I live local to the seller - if you need help finding a shop to do a PPI I can help. Originally Posted by ryad32

I would pay if you are serious to have the valve covers pulled most of the issues and most of the expensive issues are in the top end of these cars, head bolts cams valve buckets and can adjusters are the week points and all those things are about 10k in parts and 5k in labor at a dealer so car is worthless if all those things are done. Otherwise some torque converter issues oil leaks and power steering issues are common. If you are not a diy person comfortable with tackling these things it may not be worth fixing them on a car that is worth less than 15k. Make sure someone that knows what they are looking at inspects the top end before you pay any money for that car.
