Help replacing cam adjuster seal, mystery oil leak

Hello mb experts.

i have a bit of an oil leak showing up under the exhaust manifold on both sides and pretty bad on the left side soaking the power steering pump and ac compressor down to the undertray. I replaced the valve cover gaskets thinking that was the source of the leak but that was not the issue.

I am now thinking it’s the cam adjuster cover leaking and wondering if anyone has replaced the cam adjuster seals and can give some advise on a diy. I am hoping the valve covers don’t have to come off to get to these seals but would appreciate any help or wisdom by the group.

thanks is advance, car has 76k miles

You have to at least loosen the valve cover and lift the front as it seals to the top of the cam adjuster cover, then the cam adjuster cover is just 4 or 5 bolts and pulls off towards the front of the car, put in the seal very easy, slide back on the cam adjuster and tighten then tighten down the valve cover. You can probably get the cam adjuster cover off without taking the valve cover off but you will never get it back on without damaging the seal on the valve cover.

Thanks for the feedback, so basically valve cover needs to be lifted to get cam adj cover installed. Darn , double work this weekend again. Can I use the same seals on the valve cover I replaced last week or do I need to buy another new set.

Do I need to drain oil before pulling cam adj cover?

really appreciate the feedback

No, some will leak out so just have a towel underneath to catch it.

Good advice - it is more oil than you think likes to come out of the cam adjuster area, so stuff some rags under there so it doesn't get all over your belts etc.

Huge thanks for the responses here. I replaced cam cover adj seal and solved the oil leak issue,

I would say if your changing valve cover gaskets, the cam cover seal should be a must do as well. Easy to access and replace when valve covers are off.
