PPI - Cam lobes

Hi everyone!

I’m on the verge of buying a C63 and have been reading about common issues.

Is it reasonable to have the cam lobes and adjusters checked as part of a PPI?

Thanks!

If you want to spend 1000 in parts and labor. I wouldn't let a dealership take my cams out the car to inspect my adjusters.

Ya probably not worth the cost to inspect and the dealer I agree would probably look at you like you are crazy and deny ever hearing of any issues regarding the m156

The PPI inspector would probably only report something wrong with the tappets or CA's if they could hear ticking noises coming from the area of valve covers..
Mine was quiet for the first 8-12 months of ownership then the ticking started.

Adjusters you can hear pretty much as they start to wear and ultimately they all wear, all make noise but takes a lot of wear before one fails.

I doubt anyone will pull the cam covers unless you to have it done and dealer is likely to just say no and not deal with it and wait for another buyer. You might be able to get it scoped through the oil fill hole and get a bit of a look at the lobes on the drivers side as that is very little work and gives you some idea.

If you hear the adjusters, that happened:

The adjuster always are fine. Only that plate with that little pin have wear. There is a repair kit here in Germany. Only the plate and the pin from a very strong material. Never adjuster problems again.

My understanding is that MB never updated the part, so even brand new ones will wear and get noisy, so the rebuilt kit above may be a better option than just replacement.

Unfortunately there is no shop yet. It is a friend of mine who sells the repair kit. I think he sells the kit for about 1300$. Compared to a new camshaft adjuster that costs $750 and breaks down again after 40.000 miles, a good deal. I've installed the kit in my car as well.

Crocodon, I'm sure you can have a reputible Mechanic, doing your PPI to use a Bore Scope (extened and flexible camera head, with remote TV screne), to look at your Cam Lobes and Followers?
Mind you, they will ony be able to inspect the LHS Cam etc, via the Oil filler cap.

Hope that helps
