ESP Module or Speed Sensor ??

Hey Guys, I'm new to this forum.

Purchased a beautiful 2014 507 Edition (41k miles) about a month ago and have been having some problems. I drove the car home on the first night in slightly snowy conditions and everything was fine until I reached my driveway that night and got some wheel slip. All of a sudden I got all of the ESP Inoperative messages and lost power steering and received fault codes U0121 (Lost communication with ABS) and P2158 (Vehicle Speed Sensor B). The errors went away after restarting the car in the morning and I was left with a check engine light and those codes. I deleted the codes and they did not return until a few nights ago when I was doing some spirited driving, I took off with traction control off and got some wheel spin and the lights returned. Pulled over, restarted the car and once again gone. Brought the car to Mercedes (not very smart I know) and they told me it was the ESP MODULE and quoted me at a ridiculous price of $4500 installed, although I read on the forums some of you had it done at Mercedes for about $1,600-$1800 (which I would be ok with of course assuming it is 100% the module and nothing else)

Picked up the car from Mercedes today after declining the service and did some very hard driving and did not get any lights yet.

Im really new to this car and wanna try other options first, I know some other threads talk about this error. But I wanted to post and see what solution you guys have and which speed sensor I can try and replace or if it can possibly be some other issue. I assume the dealer just wants to make the most money possible...

Thank you all in advance.

Code says wheel speed sensor. Probably right. Seems like a cheap and easy thing to change first before dropping $$$$ on a new ESP unit doesn’t it.

ESP = ABS module - I believe they are one and the same. My codes were the same stuff and it ended up being the ABS controller unit (I went down the sensor replacement route first). The ABS controller is I believe coded to your car and if that is the case then the repair of the existing one does not require recoding. A fiddly thing to remove without the right tool but a cheap repair by a specialist repairer- only cost me around AUS$600.00 including return post plus my own time fitting.

Which sensor did you actually replace? having a hard time finding OEM 2012+ front sensors for some reason online. Also, I believe it is called ESP Module based on the part number.. here is a link to an OEM module on ECS Tuning- https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...le/0035407045/

For some reason the part says it only fits C63 AMG Years 2008-2010... kinda odd

& lastly Did you use a local repair expert? or did you send the unit away?

The module you linked to is the one I had repaired - ABS & ESP = same device - controls your anti lock braking and applies/releases braking for stability control.

I removed and installed myself. Once removed, I sent the unit away to a specialist repairer I found with an online search and it was back two days later. Install was very quick compared to removal because I had wasted time getting it out without a suitable tool.

A new unit may need coding to your car????

Find a good independent MB specialist if you are not good with your hands. The stealership will rape you on cost.

Thank you for all the information. Thought I would give a quick update - called another local MB Dealer and they quoted the part at $1,200 and said it would most likely be an hour or two for labor (to code to my car) . I think its funny how the other dealer tried to tell me the exact same part was $3,600 and quoted me with labor for about $4,500 LOL.

Of course I will make sure to try all other solutions before I bring it to MB - but I can sleep better at night knowing the repair will be about $1,500-$,1600 worst case compared to the other dealer at $4,500

Mercedes Benz of Paramus in New Jersey = actual thiefs.
