PCV valve or IM gasket?

Hey everyone:

After a quick forum search, I have all but confirmed confidence in my mechanics quick determination on an issue. Just wanted to post it here for more confirmation or to see if anyone else has had same situation but different cause (like both banks gaskets going at same time).

Car is making a whine when warm. Doesn't really change with RPM. Lasts for a few seconds (1-2 seconds) after I shut it down. Mechanic says PCV valve needs replacing. I also have a CEL throwing P0171, P0174, P2187, and P2189... seeming to be both sides lean. He (mechanic) took the oil filler cap off while it was running and there was a TON of pressure built up. He indicated it wasn't normal to have that much pressure... he had to use a wrench to get the cap off.

Also noticed that I have a P228f code but that may be old...

Long shot here, but are you running aftermarket filters by chance? Some filters are known to cause the engine to run rich. Bad/Dirty MAF sensor? Another thing that comes to mind is intake manifold gasket. Others can maybe make more sense... goodluck.

Stock filters but I deleted charcoal nearly 2 years ago. The whining sound is what makes mech think pcv or intake manifold gaskets... but with it being both sides at the same time, less leaning toward IM gaskets and more toward PCV.

Sounds like IM gaskets. Spray some brake clean near the gaskets with the car running and see if the idle changes. Also see if the I’m bolts are loose. Don’t retighten too much if they are because they are torque to yield and could snap. I’d just replace the bolts and gaskets if they are loose.

Took your advice and sprayed around the seal with some carb cleaner. No change in revs on either side of either gasket, although you can't reach all parts of the gasket directly with the airbox on. Still, no revs.

Im gasket and not cause increased crank case pressure so if you are experiencing that you have a pcv issue or excessive blowby

Would either of those issues you mention also cause the lean condition on both banks?

Generally no, lean conditions are usually caused from unmetered air entering the engine. The Intake manifold is a good place to look on these cars. It sounds like you may have more than one issue. Is it running lean at all times or just a stored code that was present?

I don't know how to check it's current condition, but those codes were stored when I pulled them yesterday.

Drivability is not affected, I know that much.

I would be inclined to pull the intake manifold and do gaskets and PCV at the same time since you'll have the intake off. Parts are relatively cheap and labor will be about the same as doing either individually.
