Oil leak from top of engine?
2013 c63 - The undertray was covered in oil but I have never seen oil under the car and the oil level has not been an issue however it seems I have a leak from somewhere high up on the engine. It is coming down both sides of the engine, one oil streak looks like it is coming from behind the starter motor. Does anyone know what this is likely to be?
My plan is to remove the intake manifold and inspect but would like to order seals before I do that.

As above typically the valve covers leak and run down, the plastics ones like you have also like to crack and leak.

Are you 100% sure it’s oil, and not oil+coolant? The photos aren’t great. Looks like the leak could have some coolant included.

The pics don't help much as there is just oil on the bottom of your engine. You need to find the highest point there is oil on the engine and then it is leaking right above there, so if you have oil above the exhaust manifolds just below the valve covers, then the valve covers are leaking, you it is all clean that high up but you have oil leaking about 6 inches above the pans but not above that, then it is the upper pan/bead plate leaking. The bedplate is the top half of the pan that bolts in and secures the crankshaft and is sealed to the block, then the lower pan is sealed to that, then the lower pan metal covers seal to that - basically Mercedes decided they are too good for one oil pan gasket and made sure where 3 separate pan gaskets that can leak - 4 if you count both lower pan metal covers, but it is also the modern way most engines are now made with a bedplate and then a pan to double the leaking fun. Just say a prayer it isn't the bedplate as that is engine out typically.

I felt along the rocker cover edges and couldn't see or feel any oil.
Mechanic said "it's a figure of 8 seal right in the middle at the top" but I'm not sure.
The leak on one side seems to come from behind the starter motor. The mechanic said there is a drain line somewhere there from above. The other side I can't see but it doesn't appear to be above the exhaust manifold. Nothing visible from the top and no burnt oil smell.

Sounds like a leak from not the normal places, might have to put some dye in the oil and black light it to see where it originates.

If it does turn out to be the upper pan, can I just love with it? Just wondering if it will get worse.
Fwiw I have never seen oil on the ground, it was only found by chance when removing undertray.

Ya pretty much if it isn't getting on the belts and just leaking on the undertrays you can live with it for a long time until it gets bad enough to drip or bother you more.
It is a total ghetto fix but there are things designed for externally sealing a leak which can also buy a bit of time if it is the upper pan gasket that has failed in a particular area.

Speaking of, mine has finally gotten to the point where I see a few drops of oil on the garage floor and under the car. Bringing it in next week, should be a good time with my warranty company. However, once they cover this, it will officially have paid for itself and then some. Not sure if I should be happy or sad about that
