Electronic steering lock
Last night my ESL decided to call it quits. I'm planning on doing the ESL delete.
My question is if it in the locked position does it matter since I'm going to replace it, or do I need to get it somehow in the unlocked position. In order for me to put the new ESL delete module in. I have tried tapping on it hoping maybe it would unlock so I could disconnect the battery.

Do a search here for the ESL and you will come up with a lot of good info. Ideally, as I remember it, you want to try using the key to get it to unlock one last time. No starting, just get it to the first "key on" position, unlocked. Then, disconnect the battery. Do not take the key out. (Maybe don't even return it to off, I don't remember). Doing the repair with the steering unlocked is way easier than having to do it with it locked, (dropping the steering column, exact drilling, etc.). You've got some crafty people here. Check it out. YouTube / Google may have some info. Good luck with the project.

This happened to me a few months back. I was successful multiple times in violently shaking the wheel back and forth and it unlocking enough.
Should you get it unlocked, make sure you disconnect battery so it doesn't re-lock. I had an emulator programmed by a user on here for around $250, works fantastic. Be prepared to become a contortionist if you plan on doing it yourself, as its tucked way up there. Feel free to DM me if you need any help!
