M156 Engine Startup Opinions
I haven't had much experience with the m156s and got this startup video from a seller. Does anyone have any issues with the sound?
Engine has 75k miles and was maintained at merc dealer.
Concerned about camshaft adjusters and the odd 'ping'. Can't tell if it is just the video/audio location or if something else stands out. Also there is a bit of tapping for a short time.

needs adjusters initial rattle and likely the short tapping sound. A lot of these have the start up rattle but that constant tap sound needs replacement

Sounds pretty typical for Cam Adjusters at that mileage, a bit of rattle at startup but it does sound like it stops, if it doesn't then they may be too worn and need replaced. Starts as early as 15 or 20k and gets longer as the miles increase, about what I would expect to hear at those miles - good news is there is a repair kit now, so a lot cheaper to fix as the kit is more like 600 bucks total vs cam adjusters at 600-700 each. Budget a couple grand to have it fixed with the kit in the next 20 or 25k miles I would suspect if you are paying to have them done.
The rattle is what it is and the Cam Adjusters will work for a long time rattling, what you really want to do is scan for codes and make sure there are no codes for timing indicating the cam adjusters are not just noisy but unable to lock and then they throw codes and need repaired.

It’s pretty simple:
a) Do you like the tapping/rattling? Then don’t worry about it, it’ll get more frequent and louder.

engine sounds fine. that is the cam adjuster and is what i would consider normal. the engine sounds healthy to my ears.
