Camshaft adjuster Plates

I am having some machined but need some help on steel grade required

given that the hole wears and not the pin it would seem that the pin would be harder so i need to know what grade of steel is needed to avoid wearing the pin

I'd check out the info under the separate stages...i think somewhere he talks about the actual steel he used.

My guess is 9310 unless it's too heavy.

I say whatever steel that is possible to harden to RC42 Core and Surface hardness RC60(taken from the website linked above)
Friction is just a sell trick, as there are play inside the that oil fills up.
The oem plates are made from a sintered steel as i can see, and that´s where the problem is,
It releases small particles easy in the edge that the pin is touching, and the cycle begins.

EN36A Case hardened to 60-62RC, or
4340 Nitrided to 0.60-0.75mm.
Ideally, DLC'd.

There’s something misleading from swedepats post here. PVD plus oil is what decreases surface friction. The combination of both virtually makes the thing indestructible.

The ones on that website use the same alloys used in aircraft landing gear, there are a few versions. The other part of it is you can grind it and make it parallel and create it to spec but there’s a little problem with the stock measurements that causes the pins to bind.

the inner camshaft adjuster gear vanes have a couple thousandths of an inch of clearance being sandwiched and also poses a bit of a binding problem which is what the stage 2 and 3 plates get rid off. Better yet the front replacement covers will also get rid of further issues completely. Regardless of what others assume at face value. Swedepat hates anything branded so take his comments with a grain of salt.

Yes they are easy to copy. In 2017 Mercedes upgraded the composition of steel in the same manner as everyone else in the world is doing and they’ve also worn out. There’s lots to consider for sure and the site has pretty much already got it all down to a tee.

Finally I don’t frequent on here as much as I used to but just ask and I can answer some more questions and clarify assumptions from the site 😎. All this copying is exciting!

Each to their own..
Sideways play in the phasers are well above a 'couple of thousands'.
Aircraft landing gear,, well.. some of them are made of 300m, the same material as Mark williams use in their driveshafts, i can´t see the 'magic' here.
It is just ordinary AISI 4340(ss2541) steel.
A well known good matrial to make shafts and gears from.
I made mine from 4140(ss2244), which is also a high grade steel, very very slightly less strong then 4340 but has some other advantages instead.
And this area in the camphasers are a low torque area so you don´t need to exaggerate it to the moon.

And what did ya know, i made mine for free! (not a single dime spent yet)
And i made a double set, and still got the oem' s(in good shape) i figure i got plates for the rest of my life

Theres no magic claimed anywhere. As I had said there’s hate coming from swedepat for the most random things.. Last, a couple thou each side, front and back isn’t tiny 😁 they add up!
