Headbolts on a Pre-Facelift. (109k Miles)

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I just pulled my heads off my 109k mile C63 Pre-Facelift. I'm replacing buckets/tappets with updated SLS style as well as revised headbolts obviously. Just wondering what else is recommended to be replaced while I have my engine out. Thanks!

Check intake manifold corrosion. At that mileage, there may be some holes.

10 C six trizzle
crankcase valve, if you're feeling really crazy you could do valve stem seals.

When I did it, I did buckets, headbolts, valve stem seals, timing chain tensioner, and idler pulleys (I went with Weistec) with the serpentine belt. I didn’t do injectors and then like 2k miles later, I had a leaky injector that luckily didn’t take out the motor. All the above answers are good too.

I'm no expert on this... but I've heard many say the upper oil pan seal can only be changed with the engine out. Considering your mileage and you already have it out, might be worth considering.

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone. I have a new manifold on the way and plan on sealing it with epoxy primer inside and out. I have the heads going to my machine shop tomorrow for refinishing valves and having the stems resealed. Ill have to replace the chain tensioner now that you mention it. PCV was done not too long ago but plan on doing a catch can before I put the engine back in. If you guys can think of anything else, it is greatly appreciated. I plan on tracking the car hard after the BS kit is installed but want to get her mechanically sound first. Will be posting all progress along the way. Thanks again!

Did you find a "NEW" manifold? If so, how much was that?

Sorry I should've clarified, I found a "new to me manifold" for $240 off Mercari app (I know random) it arrived today and honestly looks mint, comparatively. My previous intake had both of the fuel rail bolt holes snapped off. Ill post pictures and a write up on it when I take it apart and seal it this weekend. Glad you guys recommended the locking plates on the adjusters, they were ready to go.

Reseal of the Manifold

Slight update: Took apart my manifold and the "new to me" Mercari manifold. Overall the Mercari manifold was in much better condition than my current one. I will be prepping and sealing the Mercari Manifold, as well as my aluminum valve covers tomorrow, and putting a fresh coat of paint on top. Here are a few pictures of Mercari manifold. The internal pictures are from my old manifold. So you can see what 109k miles does untreated.

Will update when I'm finished.

My gosh, what made those holes in the plate? Apart from the cracking, it looks like it's crumbling apart

Have you considered upgrading to a non-magnesium throttle body plate?

Update on Progress

Just a little update. Got my heads back from machine shop today. Had them cleaned inside and out as well as the valve stem seals replaced per recommendation. Also had the valve covers and strut brace sandblasted in order for me to paint them. Will be putting engine back together tomorrow and giving its final touch ups before setting her back in the car. Also my aluminum throttle body plate arrived this week so I can also put my intake manifold back together. Thanks for all the recommendations again. Wouldnt have thought to do most of this without you guys!

Cam Covers officially done

Decided to do these because I don't see many other 63's with valve covers AND timing covers painted. I now see why... they're a PITA but well worth it in the end. Enjoy!

@skullbox15 ill let you know exact brand when I get back from vacation on Monday. I used an epoxy based primer, a base coat, and clear. Guy at paint shop told me many of his customers have been using this stuff on engine blocks and it holds up well. I guess we'll see what happens after the engine heats up.

MBH Headers Have Arrived

After 7 long weeks, the headers have arrived to complete my engine modification/rebuild list. Taking them to get ceramic coated tomorrow and will hopefully be installing this upcoming week.

In the final moments...

Just got my headers back from ceramic coating. Engine is assembled and ready to go in the 63 as soon as @VictoryRoadPerformance sends me my billet engine mounts. (Still waiting on that tracking number fellas) Does anyone know if the headers and engine will go in from the top together upon install? Asking for a friend 😏

I would seriously doubt it but maybe if you have enough clearance under the engine you may be able to angle it enough to go in from the top. Try and let us know

Larger Injectors and E85

Have 630cc injectors and E85 conversion kit from @VictoryRoadPerformance . The plan is to install the larger injectors and kit while I have my engine out. My question is how should I tune the engine for larger injectors prior to my first startup. I won't put 85 into it until I take it to get tuned but I don't want the new injectors dumping too much fuel into the engine on first start. Any advise or recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Engine Installed

I ended up dropping the subframe as i didnt think the headers would clear coming in from the top. Engine is installed but needs some buttoning up. More to come next weekend.
