High pitch whine on idle (m156)

Hey guys, I'm getting a high pitch whine on my car when idling, I've circled the area it's coming from. Engine cold or warm it's there 90% of the time, some rare times it doesn't make the noise. I have no codes and it doesn't seem to affect anything performance wise.

When I turn the car off the whine slowly fades away, it doesn't instantly stop. Car has new pulleys and a belt.

What do you guys think? Vacuum leak maybe? Secondary air?

You've circled part of the power steering reservoir. They're known to have issues with the filter getting clogged, which causes a whine. I would start by replacing that.

Okay thanks ill take a look at the reservoir tonight, it does get quieter when I move the steering wheel (which is usually the opposite of power steering issues from my past experiences).

P/S noises usually get louder as the pressure increases (when the wheel is turned) but in this case the increased pressure may help overcome the restriction of the clogged filter 🤷🏽‍♂️
I haven't dug too deep into this issue, but it seems to be a common one for this engine and seems to be fixed for most people by replacing the reservoir.

the power steering reservoir has a filter in it which over time gets gummed up and causes whining. if you're moving the steering wheel and it gets quieter, that could be the issue. will wait for your report back.

exactly this. I had the same noise when i got my c63. bought the replacement kit (reservoir + fluid) from FCP Euro and it fixed the issue. Be absolutely sure to flush ALL the old fluid out until only new fluid is in the system. They provide enough fluid in the kit for a complete flush. I jacked up the front of the car so that I could turn the wheel lock to lock to perform the flush.

Perfect, and yeah I'll make sure to hook the return up to a bottle and get as much old fluid out, thanks!

This happened to me and it was the secondary air system. One of those little hoses had a small crack that could only be seen while manipulating the hose. Inspect them very closely.

Did you replace them with oem lines? Or did you just use aftermarket vacuum lines? Mine do have cracks on them as well.

I simply unplugged it, confirmed it, superglued it to see if that worked, applied some pressure while it dried and it never came back. I was also getting a secondary air system CEL code occasionally.

You said it also happened warm so I doubt it’s the secondary air. I think that is only engaged during warm up.

Yeah it happens 99% of the time, cold/warm doesn't matter. I will check the lines anyways when I do the PS reservoir. Thanks for the suggestion!

When the vehicle is idling and the noise is present, remove the oil filler cap. If the noise goes away then your problem is in the PCV system, which is located on the rear passenger side of the engine. I've done a few for the whistling noise.

Ah okay ill try that, I know the PCV was replaced last year but it seems they installed it without removing the intake manifold, so maybe they didn't do it right? Ill check and see.

Thanks!

i very recently had to diagnose a high pitch whine that disappeared when i pulled the dipstick. i knew mine was intake related but didnt know where. check my recent posts if it ends up being an intake/vacuum issue for you.

Issue is fixed!! I changed my intake manifold gaskets and replaced the pcv, most likely was the gaskets slightly leaking. So happy it wasn't something weird.

excellent. Always rewarding to fix a problem on your own.

just out of curiosity- did you see a lot
of carbon buildup in the heads and on the valve stems? I had a thin film on mine but it came off easily with some carb cleaner and a soft rag.

Yeah definitely, after doing the headbolts and lifters and fixing this whine, my engine is super smooth!

Not really, they were fairly clean, my car has 224k km on it too.

Post a proud video. With so many “does this sound bad” videos, I forget what sounds good.
