Coolant service
Hi AMG folks, I am thinking about flushing my coolant - 2012 p31 with 71k. I realize that the service manual says 150k/15 years but this seems very long to me and surely the coolant must have lost some of its cooling/anti corrosive properties by now. Being that's it's 12 years old now surely it's good preventive maintenance? My other question is that I have heard that there is a additive package of silicates in the expansion tank that releases slowly over time. If I was to do a coolant flush would it be smart to change the expansion tank out for a new one too so as to replenish the additive pack?

Agreed. I wouldn't go by what MB says... If we followed their intervals for oil changes, we wouldn't have any camshaft lobes left

Haha, I wouldn't listen to Mercedes service advisors, either. The last one I spoke to said oil changes on an M156 should be every 15,000 miles.

I change the expansion tank every time I change the coolant. It has a special additive pack in it that dissolves over time and helps protect the coolant system. I don’t know, but that kind of sounds like a good idea. It’s only $60. Why wouldn’t you?

Isn't there one in the radiator as well? I could be getting it mixed up with what's in the ac condenser.

yeah I thought there was one in the radiator didn't know of anything in the expansion tank. The packet is basically so you can use your coolant in extended intervals and so after it's lost it's anti corrosion properties. Isn't needed if you are changing your coolant regularly
